Reacher Season 3 Delivers Epic Fight That Fans Have Been Waiting For!

The third season of ‘Reacher’ has ended, and it looks like there will be more to come. So far, Amazon’s adaptations of Lee Child’s ‘Jack Reacher’ books have been successful. While Season 2 (based on ‘Bad Luck and Trouble’) had some slow moments, it’s fair to note that this novel might not be the first one fans would think of when asked about Child’s books ideal for binge-watching. However, the announcement that ‘Persuader’ would be the book for Season 3 made fans excited because, like Season 1’s adaptation of ‘Killing Floor’, ‘Persuader’ is particularly well-suited for TV adaptation. Overall, Season 3 handled this task quite well.

As a movie enthusiast, I must admit that Season 2’s fight sequences fell short of being engaging and thrilling for me. However, the creators have an opportunity to amend this issue by introducing Paul ‘Paulie’ Van Hoven from Lee Child’s Jack Reacher series, a character who dwarfs even Reacher’s imposing stature.

Was Reacher vs. Paulie Worth the Wait?

As a dedicated fan, I must say that the most pivotal casting choice for Season 3 was undeniably Paulie, and the show’s creators truly hit the mark by selecting Olivier Richters for the role. This formidable Dutch bodybuilder, who has graced our screens as Ursa in Black Widow, Hauke in Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny, and Krom in Borderlands (where he was one of the rare standout aspects), absolutely nailed the characterization of Paulie. His imposing physical presence is undeniably intimidating, but it’s Richters’ skillful portrayal of Paulie’s chilling, ruthless, and masochistic persona that leaves us in no doubt of his talent.

Generally speaking, Season 3 of Reacher follows closely to the book’s storyline. However, it made significant alterations by removing Elizabeth Beck (a character that primarily intensified dislike for Paulie), and introducing Frances Neagley – a beloved character among Reacher fans. This modification proved effective, and there remains ample motivation to support Reacher in his battle against Xavier Quinn’s colossal henchman.

Indeed, I must say, the anticipation for Reacher’s confrontation with Paulie was certainly worth every moment. It was a nostalgic return to the raw, brutal hand-to-hand combat scenes that made those intense brawls in Season 1 stand out. The entire fight scene, roughly lasting five minutes (with intermittent cuts showing other characters charging Zachary Beck’s mansion to disrupt Quinn’s party), was perfectly timed – neither too lengthy nor too brief.

This fight features a powerful knee strike to the groin, repeated blows to the face using a shovel, an attempt at strangulation with a chain, and numerous grunts throughout. Essentially, it’s going to be tough to surpass this intense encounter in future episodes. Notable Jack Reacher adversaries include Hook Hobie from “Tripwire”, but none have portrayed such a formidable physical opponent as Paulie does.

Which of Lee Child’s novels is Amazon planning to adapt next? Will it be one of his solo works or one of the newer ones he co-wrote with his brother, Andrew? The second book, “Die Trying,” seems particularly suitable for adaptation, as does the previously mentioned “Tripwire” (the third) and “The Hard Way” (book number 10).

Instead of considering the two books used in the Tom Cruise movies, specifically Never Go Back which doesn’t appear promising, how about focusing on One Shot? I believe it could be excellently translated into a captivating television series.

Let’s cross our fingers that the next storyline won’t involve another romantic connection for Reacher, as it was well-executed with Willa Fitzgerald’s Roscoe Conklin in Season 1, and still believable with Serinda Swan’s Karla Dixon in Season 2. However, the relationship with Susan Duffy (played by Sonya Cassidy) felt contrived in Season 3.

Reacher is streaming Seasons 1-3 on Amazon Prime Video.
