Spanning almost five decades in his career, Anthony Michael Hall has taken on numerous roles that fans recognize differently. To some, he’s Brian Johnson from The Breakfast Club, while for those fond of superhero movies, he is Engel – the news reporter tormented by the Joker in The Dark Knight. Now, Hall is set to add another prestigious role to his repertoire as he joins the cast of Reacher in its third season, playing Zachary Beck. Notably, Reacher is an adaptation of the well-loved Lee Child book series, and Hall made it a point to familiarize himself with the original stories once he was given the part.
In an interview with ComicBook, I shared that upon securing the role, I indeed dived into the novel “Persuader.” I must admit, I found myself captivated by it. I feel compelled to express my gratitude towards our showrunner, Nick Santora, and Amazon Prime for offering me this incredible opportunity. In the realm of Lee Child’s works, “Persuader” is a cherished gem within the Reacher series. As such, I carried the book with me on set, seeking details and immersing myself in Lee’s unique writing style. It was my constant companion throughout the process.
Hall discussed what he drew from the book to help inform his performance on the show.
He explained, referring to the subject matter of the book, “It’s quite vividly depicted, especially regarding Zachary Beck. However, I believe I can take it from there. Regarding the acting aspect, I asked for a meeting with Nick and then auditioned for him. There’s plenty of room for interpretation here. There’s a lot to unpack. Initially, this character appears to be growing tired of Bizarre Bizarre [Beck’s rug company], which mirrors the same man in the book. But as you can see, ultimately, he turns out to be a criminal operating within a network of others. That seems to be the main plotline.
In the third season of the action-packed series, “Reacher,” Jack Reacher delves deep into the core of a wide-ranging criminal network as he attempts to save an undercover DEA informant who is running out of time. This journey takes him through a world shrouded in secrets and violence, where he encounters some leftover matters from his own past. This season is adapted from Lee Child’s novel “Persuader.
Additionally, Hall mentioned other sources that inspired him beyond the original text of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. Notably, music significantly impacted his creative process for developing the character of Willy Wonka.
He mentioned that for him, preparation is necessary since memorizing lines is crucial. This primarily involves understanding the voice and narrative flow of the story. To help with this, he often uses music as a means of contextualization. The type of music varies depending on the requirements of the scene, but he often finds himself using jazz due to his affinity for it. His choices range from classic rock like Led Zeppelin to hip hop and jazz.
New episodes of Reacher premiere Thursdays on Prime Video.
