Ready or Not 2 Writer Compares Sequel to Aliens and Confirms Timeline

Screenwriter Guy Busick is garnering more acclaim following the release of the renewed Final Destination series titled Final Destination Bloodlines. Known for his work on movies like Ready or Not and its upcoming sequel, Busick has formed a productive partnership with filmmakers Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett. This alliance, which began with Ready or Not, will persist as they collaborate with co-screenwriter R. Christopher Murphy on the sequel of their initial collaboration. In a recent conversation with ComicBook, Busick shed light on what fans can anticipate from the forthcoming sequel and how it intends to tackle the ending of the original film.

It’s interesting to note that he has some ambitious plans for where the series might progress in the future. When asked about how he intends to sidestep the infamous sophomore slump with the sequel, Busick shared that he drew inspiration from his work on Scream V and VI to break free from conventional restrictions.

The movie was a complete feast for us, a single serving if you will. We’re incredibly proud of it and thrilled with the outcome. It’s particularly gratifying that it struck a chord in the horror community. Writing it with my old friend Ryan [Christopher Murphy] made it even more special. When Searchlight suggested making another one, we were eager but wanted to ensure there was a solid reason beyond simply repeating ourselves.

In his approach to crafting the horror sequel, Busick looks towards two timeless sequels – specifically, Aliens and Terminator 2 – as models to strive for. For him and Murray, these films embody the perfect blend of elements found in successful sequels.

The person stated, “Who are the oddballs we frequently mention, including Radio Silence, Ryan, and myself? They’re like Aliens and Terminator 2, he said. How can we create a spectacle that doesn’t fall under the same genre but still resonates with those classics? The film Here I Come is a horror comedy, much like its predecessor. But what makes it stand out is the larger, more eccentric universe it presents?

For Busick and Murphy, there was a surge of enthusiasm upon crafting and delivering their idea, clearly defining the purpose for the follow-up and devising methods to reintroduce Grace, a character famously portrayed by horror actress Samara Weaving.

Samara’s acting abilities are exceptional. We found ourselves thinking, ‘We need to work with her again.’ However, we had to ensure the plot was suitable for her character. Once we came up with a fitting idea, our response was, ‘This means more Sam, more Grace!’ It’s been incredibly fulfilling. Ryan and I recently visited the set and just returned yesterday.

As a die-hard fan, I can’t help but share some exciting insights I picked up from my chat with Busick. Although he was tight-lipped about many details, he did reveal some intriguing twists regarding the timeline in the upcoming sequel. Moreover, he hinted at the vast universe of the Ready or Not series, suggesting that other families might have struck their own pacts with the devil.

The movie continues immediately following the conclusion of the previous film. Grace finds herself in a hospital, with no elapsed time for her. Her most recent memory is of her in-laws and new husband suddenly exploding right before her eyes, covering her in blood. She stepped outside for a cigarette, and emergency medical teams and firefighters arrived on the scene. The story resumes exactly there as stated by the speaker to ComicBook. In creating this world, we paid particular attention to detail even in the first film, questioning if the Le Domas were not the only family with such abilities.

He mused, “It seems there’s more to this tale. Who else might be involved and are they connected? Could it be that there’s a group of families who have struck deals with the enigmatic Le Bail character? What would such a network resemble? These questions now hold great appeal as we follow their trail.

The film “Ready or Not: Here I Come” is being made now and is expected to hit cinemas in 2026. We see Weaving reprising her role as Grace, while other well-known actors have joined the cast. This includes Sarah Michelle Gellar from “Buffy,” Kevin Durand from “Abigail,” acclaimed horror director David Cronenberg, and Elijah Wood, who was in “Lord of the Rings.
