The Nichelle Nichols Space Camp is a collaboration between the Nichelle Nichols Foundation and the US Space & Rocket Center in Huntsville, Alabama. Since 1982, this center has been a renowned program, modeled after the rigorous training of NASA astronauts, with an emphasis on teamwork, leadership, and inspiring aspiring space travelers worldwide. The Nichelle Nichols Space Camp welcomes curious minds from every U.S. state, territory, and more than 150 foreign nations, embodying the diversity and inclusivity of Starfleet and the United Federation of Planets.
The Nichelle Nichols Space Camp spans over three days, offering an immersive experience that merges authentic astronaut training (featuring zero-gravity and spacesuit sessions) with intriguing subjects such as Mars settlement and potential encounters with extraterrestrial intelligence. This camp caters to a diverse range of space enthusiasts, providing education on space, aviation, and robotics. At Space Camp, you’ll find two esteemed figures from both the original and modern Star Trek series. Legendary Walter Koenig, who played Ensign Pavel Chekov, serves as a member of the board of directors and an ambassador for the organization. This role brings him closer to his cherished friend Nichelle Nichols, another cast member from Star Trek: The Original Series with whom he shared the screen in six Star Trek movies.
As a dedicated movie enthusiast, I’m thrilled to share that Bonnie Gordon will be gracing the Space Camp set in her role as Space Camp Cadet Coordinator and Chaperone. Renowned for her captivating voice as the USS Protostar’s computer and numerous roles in Star Trek: Prodigy, Bonnie brings a wealth of experience to help guide cadets through the cosmic puzzles and celestial enigmas that lie ahead. Beyond her illustrious acting career, Bonnie is also an accomplished singer and a vibrant presence at Star Trek conventions, making her a perfect addition to this interstellar adventure.

There’s Even A Documentary About Nichelle Nichols’ Work With NASA
Nichelle Nichols, following the conclusion of Star Trek: The Original Series, forged a lasting bond with NASA starting in the 1970s. Through her company Women in Motion, she actively sought and encouraged qualified women and people of color to apply for NASA’s space shuttle program. In this role as a NASA ambassador, Nichols traveled extensively across the country. Her efforts ultimately led to the recruitment of Dr. Sally Ride, America’s first woman astronaut, and Col. Guion Bluford, the first African-American astronaut, by NASA. Nichols maintained her connection with NASA and remained a passionate advocate for space exploration until her passing in 2022.
In the 1970s, as NASA was deciding on a name for its first space shuttle, President Gerald Ford, who enjoyed “Star Trek”, proposed the name Enterprise. It turned out that Gene Roddenberry, the creator of “Star Trek”, along with Nichelle Nichols and the cast, attended the rollout of the space shuttle Enterprise from the Palmdale manufacturing facilities on September 17, 1976.
