According to a recent report by Jason Schreier of Bloomberg, it appears that employees from BioWare who were temporarily assigned to other internal teams by EA might not have the opportunity to return. This is in response to last week’s news about BioWare scaling down while focusing on developing the next Mass Effect game. Schreier suggests that the positions these workers left might have been turned into permanent transfers, rather than temporary ones.
Because the next Mass Effect game is still in early stages of production, BioWare decided to reduce its workforce temporarily. Some employees will be able to work on different projects, while a dedicated team of experienced Mass Effect developers will lay the groundwork for the upcoming RPG. This move was made after the completion of Dragon Age: The Veilguard development, as BioWare currently does not have any other games in progress.
Initially, these relocations were viewed as temporary, but according to Schreier’s report, those who were shifted won’t be able to return to the developer at BioWare automatically. If they wish to work there again, they must patiently wait for job vacancies and reapply.
According to Schreier, this recent change was met with displeasure by certain employees who were unexpectedly assigned to new teams at studios they hadn’t initially intended to work for. Some of these individuals had joined BioWare with the expectation of contributing to renowned role-playing game series, and the prospect of working on action or sports games did not hold the same appeal.
According to a recent Bloomberg report, I learned that around 24 individuals were let go as part of the company restructuring – a detail missing from BioWare’s initial statement last week. Interestingly, it’s now estimated that only slightly more than 100 people remain employed at BioWare.
