In this new take on crime movies, Jeremy Saulnier (known for Blue Ruin and Green Room) pens and directs the story. The captivating Aaron Pierre plays Terry Richmond, a Marine veteran who previously served his country. As fate would have it, in the fictional town of Shelby Springs, Louisiana, he uncovers a significant police corruption scandal while trying to secure bail for his relative.

In this situation, Terry might struggle to post bail before Mike’s relocation to a state prison, where he could face serious harm. Terry encounters minimal assistance from the authorities in Shelby Springs and eventually develops animosity towards Chief Sandy Burnne (Don Johnson). However, Terry does find support in courthouse worker Summer (AnnaSophia Robb).

As the series of events unfold, it becomes clear that Terry possesses exceptional hand-to-hand combat abilities, which he employs in an attempt to retrieve the bail money. Unfortunately, his efforts come too late – Mike sustained fatal stab wounds shortly after being transferred to a state prison and succumbed to his injuries.

Terry finds the idea of investigating a suspected large-scale corruption scandal during the summer appealing, as it appears that several individuals have been unjustly detained for up to 90 days due to minor offenses. However, at first, Terry shows no inclination towards lending assistance.

Yet, things take an unexpected turn when Summer is secretly drugged while sleeping and calls Terry in distress for assistance. Upon his return to town, more mysterious occurrences ensue, eventually leading Summer and Terry to question the town judge (James Cromwell), who discloses that the 90-day scheme they had been involved in was actually part of a complex plan to address financial shortages.

The situation seems grim for Summer and Terry, but they understand that by obtaining SD cards with dashcam footage from the police, they can reveal the scam. Terry concurs with Officer Lann, one of the officers implicated in the scandal, on returning the SD cards as long as he facilitates the release of Summer. This arrangement appears to be leading towards the climactic showdown at Rebel Ridge, where a significant number of armed police officers have gathered.

Instead of making a beeline for the destination, Terry first pays a visit to the police station. There, despite subduing Burnne, he finds himself detained by Deputy Jessica Sims (Zsané Jhé). Interestingly, Sims makes a bold move by defying her superior, ultimately thwarting his malicious plan. The climax arrives when Terry, Marston, and Summer reach the hospital. Unfortunately, Marston and Summer require immediate medical attention, while Terry manages to obtain the incriminating dashcam footage – evidence that could potentially bring the authorities of Shelby Springs to account.
