In contrast to the original Green Hulk portrayed by Bruce Banner, the Red Hulk character, played by Harrison Ford as Thaddeus “Thunderbolt” Ross in Captain America: Brave New World, boasts a significant advantage. Although it might take some time before we witness a face-off between Red Hulk and Mark Ruffalo’s Jade Giant in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, an intriguing fact that many fans may not be aware of is that there are actually two Red Hulks in the comics. One of them, Robert Maverick, even appears in Marvel’s Sam Wilson: Captain America series, which premiered concurrently with Brave New World. The final issue of this comic has significantly upgraded the Red Hulk, a development that would make even the Hulk himself envious. (Proceed with caution; spoilers for Sam Wilson: Captain America #5 below.)
In issue #5 of Sam Wilson: Captain America, the storyline is crafted by Greg Pak, Evan Narcisse, Eder Messias, Fer Sifuentes-Sujo, and VC’s Joe Caramagna. This marks the end of Captain America and his comrades’ battle against the Eaglestar Corporation and its ruthless leader, Dennis Harmon. Harmon covertly enlisted marginalized Black communities to cultivate land on his aerial Skydream facility, with Red Hulk serving as head of security. Initially, Captain America butted heads with Red Hulk, but eventually, Robert Maverick unveiled Harmon’s sinister intentions.
A group consisting of Captain America, his relative Billie, the Red Hulk, Falcon (Joaquin Torres), Josiah X aka Shadow Soldier, and Patriot united to thwart Dennis Harmon and Skydream from launching an attack on Black cities before it was too late. The Red Hulk managed to destroy one of Skydream’s floating strongholds, causing our team to freefall towards the ground. Cap and Falcon have wings, enabling them to decelerate their descent, but this leaves Red Hulk and Josiah X in a precarious position. In an effort to save himself, the Red Hulk employed one of the experimental upgrades supplied by Harmon – massive red dragon wings.
Red Hulk has mutated gamma wings, allowing him to fly
A significant aspect of Dennis Harmon’s transgressions involved unlawful genetic engineering. Utilizing this technique, he developed the War Eagles, which were security personnel from Skydream, possessing individual wings as well as colossal mutated birds. It seems that Red Hulk underwent experiments, fortunately benefiting his life and that of Josiah X. Unlike other Hulks, who can traverse vast distances using their powerful leg muscles in a single leap, Red Hulk has the unique ability to fly, but this represents an entirely different dimension of transportation. One key distinction between Robert Maverick’s Red Hulk and Thaddeus Ross’ version is that Maverick’s can only maintain his Red Hulk form for a limited duration, usually no more than an hour. This limitation stems from a device implanted in his arm.
In addition to Red Hulk, another character who gains wings isn’t just Sam Wilson himself, but his cousin Billie, as revealed in the final episode of “Sam Wilson: Captain America.” Whether her winged transformation is temporary or permanent remains uncertain.
In the spotlight for his own “Red Hulk” solo comic series, which aligns with Marvel’s “One World Under Doom” publishing initiative, is Thaddeus Ross. This thrilling series, penned by Benjamin Percy and illustrated by Geoff Shaw, places Thaddeus in a predicament where he’s held captive by Doctor Doom, who manipulates him to conduct war simulations. However, the Red Hulk forms alliances with fellow prisoners such as Deathlok and Machine Man in an attempt to break free and bring down Doctor Doom.
