- Reddit recently launched Reddit Answers.
- It’s a new AI-powered search experience for the platform.
- Reddit Answers is rolling out to a limited number of users.
As an analyst with over two decades of experience in the tech industry, I have witnessed the evolution of search engines from their infancy to their current state. Google has long been the undisputed king of search, but recent developments suggest that its reign may be challenged.
Since Google was labeled as an illegitimate monopoly, it appears that competition within the search domain has become more intense. A previous Google engineer cautioned that the company might face larger challenges from competitors such as the temporary prototype search engine by OpenAI, named SearchGPT.
The engineer suggested that Google should pay closer attention to growing competition rather than relying too heavily on its dominant position, as it prepares for potential regulatory action from U.S. antitrust authorities.
In the search terrain now, Google might face tougher rivalry due to Reddit’s introduction of an AI-enhanced search feature called Reddit Answers. This tool aims to simplify the process of information discovery within the social media network for its users.
Similar to other AI systems such as Copilot and Google’s AI Overviews, Reddit Answers aims to provide comprehensive and well-structured responses to questions, along with relevant links to the source material. Unlike other services that draw from a variety of sources across different platforms, Reddit Answers will specifically reference Reddit’s own communities and posts as its primary source.
Reddit Solutions, the platform, is gradually launching to a select group of American users who speak English initially. Future expansions are planned for additional locations and languages. Currently, it’s accessible online and through iOS devices, while the developers are still perfecting the Android version.
According to Reddit:
As a devoted Reddit user, I’m well aware that this platform is a treasure trove of answers, guidance, and diverse viewpoints on a multitude of topics. Part of our future ambition is to enhance the search experience using artificial intelligence, aiming to make it quicker, more intelligent, and tailored to my specific needs.
Jay Peters, from The Verge, got to test Reddit’s fresh AI-enhanced user interface and here’s his account of the experience.
There’s a large query box available, yet the opening Reddit Answers page also presents several pre-populated search options you can tap on, such as “Preferred Nintendo character through all time,” “Top mystery novels of 2025,” and “Advice for flying with a baby for the first time.
Upon clicking the final option, the tool swiftly generated a compilation of links and bullet-pointed suggestions accompanied by indicators to reveal their sources. A simple click on any of these elements causes a side panel to appear, displaying the specific post from which the data was extracted.
Google’s AI Overviews stacks miles behind in comparison
Google introduced a version of Reddit’s AI-generated responses, called Google’s AI Summarization feature, which has faced criticism since its release. This began when the tool suggested eating rocks, glue, and in some cases, suicide – dangerous advice that contradicts the fact that Google obtained exclusive rights to Reddit content to power its AI.
Solution: The company swiftly handled the problem by enacting multiple strategies, such as setting off limitations for questions when AI Summaries were deemed irrelevant. Google deflected responsibility for the strange event to a ‘context gap’ in data and manipulated screen captures.
Although Google tried to rectify issues with its AI feature, it unfortunately made a mistake in October. It incorrectly displayed a game developer’s personal number as the primary contact for a studio he hasn’t been associated with for more than eight years. This error resulted in the developer receiving an angry phone call from a parent who was upset about content in a game their child plays, which the developer had worked on previously.
Reddit’s AI-driven feature isn’t just a challenge for Google; OpenAI’s ChatGPT search entered the scene in November, aiming to rival Google by swiftly delivering accurate and focused answers to queries while incorporating relevant web sources. Prior to its debut, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman hinted at the potential for enhancing search beyond its current state. Since then, users have dubbed this AI-driven search engine as a potential threat to Google, nicknaming it “Google’s nemesis.
