At this year’s Annecy International Animation Film Festival, some intriguing updates were shared about popular animated series and films! Warner Bros Discovery showcased their top talent, with hit shows like “Adventure Time,” “Steven Universe,” and “Primal” unveiling exciting news. For fans of “Regular Show,” creator J.G. Quintel was present to discuss his upcoming animated projects. Although he didn’t share many details about the forthcoming “Regular Show” revival, J.G. did provide insight into another new project that he is secretly developing.
Beyond his work on the supposedly titled “Regular Show: The Lost Tapes” sequel, Quintel is also developing a completely fresh show called “Super Mutant Magic Academy”. This series is based on a graphic novel by creator Jillian Tamaki and has been described as a mix between Harry Potter and X-Men. Although the release date for this upcoming production remains undisclosed, Quintel unveiled new artwork and an animatic at Annecy, which will eventually join Cartoon Network’s lineup.

The Origins of Mutant Magic Academy
At the recent Cartoon Network panel, I proudly shared my journey with Quintel as we delved into his origin story linked to the original comic “Super Mutant Magic Academy.” Back in 2015, I stumbled upon this unique comic by Jillian Tamaki that captivated me. We connected, and I suggested she should transform it into a series. Surprisingly, she couldn’t but proposed the idea of me doing it instead. I promised to remember her words, and seven years later, when I received a development deal at [the studio], I reached out to her, making my dream come true!
J.G. Quintel didn’t create Super Mutant Magic Academy as his first project outside the Regular Show universe. Instead, he worked on Close Enough for HBO Max which ran for three seasons. This show focused on a family dealing with daily life and issues that might challenge even the resilience of Mordecai and Rigby. Sadly, it’s no longer available on Warner Bros streaming service, making it harder to watch his latest work.
Regarding the spin-off of “Regular Show”, Quintel did reveal a sketchbook filled with food drawings which could suggest the introduction of new characters in “The Lost Tapes”. Although nothing has been officially confirmed, fans speculate that the series might re-explore the lives of Mordecai and Rigby due to a VHS tape label shown in the final episode of the original series. Given that the finale predominantly focused on older versions of its characters, going back to the past seems plausible.
