Release Date of Next Super Smash Bros. Game Seemingly Very Far Away

It seems unlikely that you’ll get to play the new Super Smash Bros. game anytime soon. Even though it’s been seven years since Super Smash Bros. Ultimate was released, Nintendo hasn’t given any hints about a new one yet. While fans have assumed that a new Super Smash Bros. game is in development, recent information suggests otherwise.

During the latest Nintendo Switch 2 presentation, Nintendo unveiled Kirby Air Riders, slated for release on the upcoming Nintendo Switch 2 this year. You might wonder, what’s the connection to Super Smash Bros? Well, Sora Ltd, known for producing Super Smash Bros, is the studio behind it. Masahiro Sakurai, who created and oversees Super Smash Bros, leads Sora Ltd. Essentially, the team that would develop a new Super Smash Bros. game has been engaged in creating Kirby Air Riders instead.

Historically, Sora Ltd has not typically functioned as a studio that produces two games. If this status quo persists, then it’s unlikely they are heavily involved in the development of the next Super Smash Bros. game beyond preliminary stages. Consequently, it may be several years before a release takes place.

To clarify, there’s a gap of roughly seven calendar years from the launch of Super Smash Bros. Ultimate in 2018 to the expected release of Kirby Air Riders this year. However, it’s important to note that Sora Ltd didn’t spend seven straight years developing Kirby Air Riders. Instead, they devoted some time to supporting and updating Super Smash Bros. Ultimate following its launch.

Four years elapsed between the launches of Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS and Wii U in 2014, and Super Smash Bros. Ultimate in 2018. Notably, game development at that time was often more rapid.

It’s likely that we won’t see another Super Smash Bros game for at least four years, possibly even longer. So, fans might have to wait until the late 2020s or early 2030s when the Nintendo Switch 2 era is over to play the next game in this popular series.

It’s been quite some time since Nintendo released anything new for Super Smash Bros. fans, and it seems unfair to keep them waiting this long. Therefore, it’s not unreasonable to assume that Nintendo might revive the support for Super Smash Bros. Ultimate by porting it to the rumored Nintendo Switch 2 or perhaps re-releasing an older game from the series. However, these are just speculations at this point.

For fans of the Super Smash Bros. series, it was disappointing that there was no mention of the game during the Nintendo Switch 2 Direct. However, what many fans might not realize is that the unveiling of Kirby Air Rider only added to their disappointment.
