Remaster Specialists Are Ready to Target the PS3 Next, And We Can’t Wait

There are so many great games, lost to time and locked to the PS3.

Due to its overly complex design, Sony has generally not considered implementing backwards compatibility, thus limiting gameplay options for many titles to streaming via PS Plus Premium on the PS5.

However, it’s these revival experts at Nightdive Studios, known for reintroducing games like Turok and The Thing, that step into the picture here.

In an interview with VGC, boss Larry Kuperman said his team is “ready” to face the challenge.

Stephen Kick, studio head, remarked: “Architecture, you know – I recall discussions when this system initially launched about how challenging it was for developers to grasp its concept – and that’s a significant hurdle with backward compatibility.

As a seasoned gamer, let me tell you this: When we dive into remastering games from the PlayStation 3 era, it’s going to be a tough nut to crack. But with all the gaming expertise we’ve gathered over time, I’m confident that we’re up for the challenge and can deliver a job well done on these PS3 remasters.

Kick went on discussing the unfortunate PS3 exclusive first-person shooter by Free Radical, titled Haze.

If Haze were our major release in 2028 (hypothetically speaking), we’d reach out to the original creators and express: “It didn’t perform as well as expected, I’m certain you’ve had ample time to reflect. We’re curious about what changes you would have made.

As a passionate enthusiast, I’ve found myself reflecting on past conversations with the creators of certain beloved games. I’ve often wondered, “If given another chance, this is how I believe they could have taken the gameplay to the next level.

For games like System Shock 2 Remastered and many others we’ve examined, moving them onto modern hardware often resolves issues such as frame rate, screen refresh rate, texture clarity, streaming efficiency, and load times.

Are there any PS3 era games in particular that you think warrant the remaster treatment?

From a personal perspective, it’s our hope that Nightdive Studios might collaborate with Sony in the future, reviving franchises such as Resistance and Killzone, which are predominantly playable only on the PS3 at present. Additionally, we’re eager to see MotorStorm titles run smoothly on more contemporary hardware.
