It’s true that the multiplayer football game Rematch has been a hit for developer Sloclap, but their creative director, Pierre Tarno, admitted that some fans of the studio might have felt let down because the new title wasn’t more like the single-player martial arts game Sifu, as they had hoped. In an interview with GamesRadar, Tarno expressed regret that some Sifu fans were disappointed upon learning about the new game.
Tarno admitted that perhaps the marketing for “Rematch” could have been stronger. He pointed out that the initial trailer for “Rematch,” which stated “from the team behind ‘Sifu’,” might have given fans of the martial arts game the impression that a new version of “Sifu” was being released.
As a gamer speaking, I’d like to apologize for any confusion caused earlier. It seems we should have shared sooner that our upcoming announcement wouldn’t be Sifu 2, despite the anticipation within the community. We wanted to avoid any unnecessary excitement and subsequent disappointment, so please don’t expect it this time around.
Alongside the dedicated fanbase for Sifu, Tarno mentioned that Sloclap was bound to move past
He pointed out that we rarely get the chance as developers to focus on creative projects we’re deeply passionate about, but we do now. This is quite unusual in our field. Moreover, players and media noticed a resemblance between our games, even though they aren’t identical. They are all third-person action games, grounded, believable, yet epic. There’s a physicality to them that connects the titles, from Absolver to Sifu to Rematch. Our previous game-making experiences enabled us to create this latest one.
In June, the game titled “Rematch” was launched, swiftly amassing over a million distinct players. It immerses gamers in the role of an individual footballer. The challenge lies in collaborating with a team consisting of 3, 4, or 5 players to defeat an opposing team. The game has sparked several comparisons with another multiplayer sports-related title, “Rocket League.” However, Tarno has previously mentioned that the studio aimed to offer a unique perspective within the genre for “Rematch,” distinguishing it from both “Rocket League” and the “FIFA”/ “EA Sports FC” series by Electronic Arts.
Tarno stated, “Each of these games stands out uniquely across various domains, excelling at their respective tasks. Therefore, we’re keen on exploring a new direction.
