Rematch Was Never Considered for a Free-to-Play Release – Creative Director

The team behind the football game titled “Rematch,” who are also known for creating the martial arts action game “Sifu,” never contemplated releasing their game for free. Pierre Tarno, the creative director of Rematch, explained this choice to PCGamer and discussed why a paid $30 price tag was chosen and how it doesn’t necessarily need to be free-to-play to achieve success.

Tarno stated, “I had never thought about free-to-play. What I appreciate about creating games is that there’s no magic formula, but the most effective approach – perhaps the only one – to achieve commercial success is simply to create an outstanding game.

The choice ultimately lies in Sloclap’s commitment to acknowledging the talent and discernment of their players. In other words, they believe that if their game is strong enough, it can attract a player base without resorting to a free-to-play model. Tarno also feels confident that Rematch offers fair value, and with its unique and robust gameplay, players will find it appealing.

At Sloclap, one of our core values is valuing our players – their intellect, their abilities, and their discernment. We appreciate complex gameplay, as gamers are a thoughtful and critical audience. They are adept at analyzing mechanics, making precise judgments about what’s effective, what isn’t, what’s balanced, and what isn’t, among other things.

What I’m saying is, just because a game is unique and well-made, it doesn’t necessarily have to be free-to-play in order to succeed. If it’s innovative, robust, and priced fairly, players will be willing to purchase it.

Back in December 2024, during The Game Awards, it was announced that a new multiplayer football game titled “Rematch” would be released. In this game, each player assumes the role of an individual player on the field. The developers at Sloclap have promised immersive third-person action, competitive online play, and skill-based mechanics as key features.

Just recently, it was disclosed that the game “Rematch” will hit PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X/S on June 19th. This revelation was accompanied by a fresh Golden Rules trailer. In this video, we got a glimpse of the game’s skill-based action, with a hint that goalkeepers in the game shouldn’t limit themselves to their box, but rather should actively engage in defense as well.

In terms of visual style, Rematch resembles Sifu, featuring a strong focus on vivid colors and flatter, more stylized textures.
