What you need to know

  • Developer Remedy Entertainment is currently working on a number of projects, including Control 2.
  • After acquiring the rights to the Control franchise from publisher 505 Games, Remedy Entertainment is now self-publishing Control 2.
  • Remedy is teaming up with Annapurna Interactive to accomplish this self-publishing, with Annapurna helping to develop and produce film and TV versions of Alan Wake and Control.

As a seasoned video game enthusiast and researcher who has been following Remedy Entertainment since the days of Max Payne, I find this partnership between Remedy and Annapurna Interactive to be an exciting development. Having closely observed Remedy’s immersive storytelling approach in games like Alan Wake and Control, it’s refreshing to see them venturing into other mediums such as film and TV.

One distinctive video game developer is making a significant stride towards fulfilling its broader aspirations in multimedia.

On Thursday, Remedy Entertainment, a studio based in Finland, announced their partnership with Annapurna Interactive. This collaboration enables Remedy to independently publish its upcoming game, Control 2, through joint financing from Annapura Interactive. Additionally, the agreement grants both companies the opportunity to develop and produce movie and TV adaptations of Alan Wake and Control under Annapurna Pictures.

According to Tero Virtala, CEO of Remedy Entertainment, our main goal remains in excelling at creating exceptional video games that have gained us international acclaim. Now is the ideal moment for us to extend the popularity of our cherished franchises to a wider global audience via films, television shows, and other platforms.

In the Annapurna region, we’ve discovered a remarkable collaborator who matches our enthusiasm and dedication towards engaging narratives. We can hardly wait to witness their realization of the worlds and personas we’ve conceived through this exclusive agreement, as they breathe life into them across various platforms.

This announcement follows Remedy Entertainment securing the ownership of the Control series from 505 Games, who released Control in 2019.

Analysis: Remedy expands its reach in a smart way

Over the last year, Remedy Entertainment has experienced success, with the release of Alan Wake 2 receiving widespread praise as their best-selling title to date. However, it hasn’t managed to generate a profit just yet.

Annapurna is experienced in various media sectors such as games, films, and TV, which makes it an ideal collaborator for Remedy’s unique blend of projects. Not many game developers adopt a cinematic approach like Remedy does, and Alan Wake 2 is one of the most cinema-like experiences we’ve seen in gaming, with a short film included within it as well.

I’m excited to watch this collaboration unfold, gain insights into Control 2, and discover details about Remedy’s upcoming endeavors such as the Max Payne reboots and Project Condor.

In my critique on Alan Wake 2, I stated that the game is “unrefined,” offering a harsh yet unforgettable journey that hardcore Remedy enthusiasts or those attracted by the talk of fear should not overlook. It delves into what it signifies to be a writer and grapple with audience demands, while providing engaging combat sequences that convincingly secure its status as a horror title.
