As a lifestyle expert, I find myself reflecting on the poignant memories of January 26, 2020 – a date that, despite being over a year past, still resonates with an unshakable sense of sorrow. Just four weeks into the new year, we were confronted with news that seemed to promise the worst of what was yet to come in 2020. The ensuing months brought loss, grief, isolation, and anxiety, but the events of that day continue to tug at my heartstrings.
24 months ago, on a Sunday morning, a series of heart-wrenching events unfolded. Initially, it seemed almost too hard to believe that a titan such as Kobe Bryant could be lost at 41 years old. As the day progressed, this idea grew increasingly surreal and difficult to fathom.
As evening approached and celebrities flocked to Los Angeles’ Staples Center, home of both the Grammys and Kobe Bryant’s illustrious 20-year NBA career, events began to align: A helicopter en route from Orange County’s John Wayne Airport to the Mamba Sports Academy in Thousand Oaks for a youth basketball tournament had crashed into Calabasas hills around 10 a.m. Regrettably, all nine people on board perished instantly.
The list encompassed Kobe, the charismatic sportsman, writer, Academy Award recipient, affectionately known as a dedicated “girl dad,” along with his 13-year-old daughter, Gianna Bryant – the second of four girls he shared with Vanessa Bryant and the one who showed great promise to follow in her father’s basketball footsteps. Tragically, this loss also claimed the lives of two of her teammates and five other adults, whose names might not be as instantly famous as Kobe, the five-time NBA champion, but their contributions were equally deserving of the outpouring of tributes and memorials that ensued.
A person named Christina Mauser, a talented defensive-minded assistant coach for Kobe and Gianna’s team who was known for solving any problem according to her husband Matt Mauser in an interview on Today the following day.
As a devoted parent, we’re continuously working on finding our way forward, striving for each morsel of joy. In a recent conversation with the Orange County Register, I expressed that sentiment as “We battle tirelessly for every ounce of happiness.
For those with loved ones on that unfortunate flight, it remains a persistent struggle every day. On the anniversary of this sorrowful event, we honor the memories of all the lives that were taken.
The individual who truly embodies the title of Greatest of All Time, with an impressive career spanning 18 NBA All-Star appearances, boasts an extraordinary resume: Five NBA championships, two Olympic gold medals, posthumous induction into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame, and an Oscar for his animated short film “Dear Basketball”, indicating a promising future in content creation that would match his athletic prowess. As he shared with USA Today in his final interview, he had a deep passion for storytelling, aiming to inspire children or equip them with valuable tools.
However, nothing brought him more joy than the family he built with his partner, Vanessa Bryant, over two decades. In an interview with Maria Shriver in November 2019, he expressed immense pride about being a father to daughters Natalia (19), Gigi, Bianka (5), and Capri (2). He spoke of the profound love he had for his children, stating that it was his greatest achievement, and nothing could surpass this powerful experience.
Kobe Bryant didn’t feel compelled to prove his basketball legacy by having a son, as fans often suggested. Instead, he cherished sharing the sport with his daughter Gigi, whom he said could carry on his legacy just fine. On Jimmy Kimmel Live in 2018, he shared an anecdote about fans approaching him and Gigi together, and Gigi would respond confidently that she didn’t need a boy to uphold their family’s basketball tradition. Bryant agreed, acknowledging her ability to do so.
Bryant was inspired to rekindle his love for the game due to Gigi’s passion for basketball. Before Gigi took an interest in the sport, he seldom watched it. However, with her involvement, they would watch games every night. In fact, taking Gigi to a Laker game in January 2020 was Bryant’s first time attending one since his jersey retirement, as he found joy in experiencing the game through her eyes.
Starting his 28th season as the head coach of the Orange Coast College baseball team, John has accumulated over 700 wins, four state titles, and was recognized as one of the American Baseball Coaches Association’s 2019 ABCA/Diamond National Coaches of the Year. As associate head coach Nate Johnson stated at an unexpected memorial, “Alto was one of the finest men I’ve ever known. If your son played for him, he treated them like his own sons. If you coached under him, he regarded you as a brother. If you worked for him, you were part of his family.”
This family included his wife Keri and their 13-year-old daughter Alyssa, who, along with sister Lexi, was a teammate of Gigi’s, described by a friend as “the funniest, most caring girl I ever met.” Lexi completed her senior year of high school while living with older brother J.J., a Boston Red Sox scout and former University of Oregon shortstop. However, the Altobelli family also encompassed the thousands who attended the memorial at Anaheim’s Angel Stadium for the trio in February. “It truly demonstrates the impact that my dad, K, and Alyssa had on everyone here,” J.J. said of the support he and his sister received. “There are no words to express what they meant to me…But tonight, let’s all live by my father’s favorite motto: ‘Are you drinking or thinking?’
To 13-year-old Payton, a teammate of Gigi’s, along with teen sons Hayden and Riley, Sarah was the one everyone relied on, her brother Andy George told The Orange County Register. He also mentioned that Payton was the kindest person you could ever meet.
Sarah and her husband Chris were an exceptional family with “wonderful children,” as described by Payton’s former elementary school principal Todd Schmidt on Facebook. He wrote that this family left a significant impact, being genuine, kind-hearted, and caring towards the staff, other families, and even him personally.
“While the world grieves for a talented athlete and humanitarian, I grieve for two people just as important,” Todd continued. “Their influence was equally substantial, their absence will be deeply felt, and our hearts are equally broken.
As a devoted admirer, I can’t help but express my profound admiration for my wife, the loving mother of Penny, Tom, and Ivy, who was also an assistant coach on Kobe Bryant’s Mamba Academy team. She possessed a sharp wit and a humor that was absolutely unparalleled, unlike anyone you’ve ever encountered.
As a fervent admirer, I can proudly say that my skills on the court caught the attention of none other than an 18-time NBA All Star – Kobe Bryant himself! Being fortunate enough to have Matt and Christina as coaches at the exclusive school where Kobe’s daughters were enrolled, Kobe recognized Christina’s exceptional basketball intellect. He invited her to share her wisdom with the children, specifically focusing on defense.
Known affectionately as MOD, or Mother of Defense, Christina was not only nurturing but incredibly intelligent and tech-savvy. She could solve any problem that came her way. Now, Matt and his kids are grappling with finding a way to carry on while preserving her legacy. As he put it in an interview with The Orange County Register, “I strive to live the life that Christina would want us to live.” He believes that life is meant to be cherished, and despite the hardships we all face, there’s always joy to be found.
