It appears Capcom is planning to bring the game “Resident Evil 6” to current-generation consoles like the Xbox Series X/S. A listing for the game has surfaced on the ESRB (Entertainment Software Rating Board) website, suggesting a potential release for these platforms. Similar to its previous versions, “Resident Evil 6” on Xbox Series X/S is expected to receive an M rating (Mature), given its content involving blood, gore, violence, strong language, and mature themes.
It’s interesting to note that as of now, there doesn’t appear to be a listing for the game on the PS5. The last time it was rated for a PlayStation release was for the PS4 back in 2016, coinciding with an Xbox One version launch at the same time. Since then, the game has also been released on the Nintendo Switch.
Since Capcom hasn’t confirmed a current-gen version of Resident Evil 6, it’s probable that the upcoming release will follow a pattern similar to the 2016 version, with an improvement in resolution to match contemporary hardware standards, and possibly updated textures. However, unlike some of Capcom’s more recent releases, this new version is unlikely to be a complete overhaul or remake.
Originally launched in 2012 on PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360, Resident Evil 6 was designed as a climactic chapter, featuring an array of characters who have graced the franchise over the years, all joining forces for a thrilling conclusion. Notably, this game places significant importance on its multiplayer aspects, offering cooperative play throughout the campaign and even permitting players to infiltrate other players’ campaigns as unique zombies.
Despite its financial success, the game drew criticism for prioritizing action elements over its original survival horror foundation. Critics also disliked its use of quick-time events and a storyline that became too fragmented, losing focus. However, the core mechanics of Resident Evil 6 were well-received, with many considering it an exceptional development of the gameplay established by Resident Evil 4 at the time.
In this list for Resident Evil 6, there’s no reference to Resident Evil 4 or 5, games that have only been released up to PS4 and Xbox One consoles. However, the remake of Resident Evil 4 was the latest significant release in the series. Given its success, with over 9 million copies sold so far this month, it’s likely that the company is now focusing on developing the next major sequel in the franchise.
