Resident Evil 9 – 10 Rumours You Need to Know

As a seasoned gamer with over three decades of experience under my belt, I must say that the latest rumors about Resident Evil 9 have me truly intrigued! The island setting, open-world elements, and return of zombie-like enemies sound like a thrilling combination that could breathe new life into this iconic series.

As a dedicated fan of the Resident Evil series, I’ve been thrilled with how the franchise has been on a winning streak since the release of Resident Evil 7 in 2017, delivering one fantastic survival horror title after another. However, it’s been over three years since Resident Evil Village graced our screens, and as the days pass, I find myself growing more impatient for the next mainline numbered installment. With Capcom focusing their attention on Monster Hunter Wilds in 2025, it seems that an official announcement and details about Resident Evil 9 might be a while away yet. All we know so far is that Koshi Nakanishi, who directed Resident Evil 7, will be at the helm for this upcoming chapter.

As ever, though, there’s no shortage of unofficial information out there. Over the last several months and years, leaks and rumours from a variety of sources have claimed different things about Resident Evil 9, and here, we’re going to take a look at a few that have caught our eye. Remember, however, that these are all unconfirmed and unverified details, which means there’s no guarantees that they’re going to be accurate. We certainly hope some in particular do, however, because they make some intriguing promises- starting with our first pick…

STARS LEON AND JILL

It’s been quite some time since we had a mainline Resident Evil game featuring Leon, whose last appearance was chronologically in Resident Evil 6, and even longer ago for Jill Valentine, who was last seen in Resident Evil 5. However, according to a recent leak by the YouTube channel Residence of Evil, both characters are expected to take center stage as the main protagonists in Resident Evil 9. If this leak is accurate, the game will be set four years after the main story of Resident Evil Village, which means it’s several years before its epilogue. Moreover, it seems that Leon and Jill won’t be the only familiar faces making a comeback in this new installment.

CHRIS AND BARRY RETURN

Chris Redfield has consistently been a key character in the Resident Evil series, dating back to Resident Evil 4 in 2005 without missing an appearance since then. According to leaks about Resident Evil 9, while Chris won’t be the main character, he will contribute to the storyline. Additionally, Barry Burton, another beloved character who hasn’t been seen since Revelations 2, is also expected to make an appearance. It’s rumored that both Chris and Barry will provide support to Leon and Jill during their missions through radio communications.

EVELINE AND THE MEGAMYCETE

In simpler terms, Eveline and the Mold have played crucial roles in the storylines of “Resident Evil 7” and “Village”, and it’s rumored that “RE9” will wrap up this storyline. According to leaks, the game’s plot revolves around a mysterious organization that has started mass-producing Eveline clones using a fungus called Megamycete, which was given to them by Miranda, the main antagonist from “Resident Evil Village”. This certainly spells trouble.

ANTAGONIST

As a die-hard Resident Evil fan, I can’t help but get excited when I hear we might be going head-to-head with another nefarious corporation again in the upcoming Resident Evil 9. The main baddie this time around is rumored to be a man named Mr. Simon, who’s apparently calling the shots on bioweapon production for the company on the island. This franchise has always had some formidable adversaries, but ever since Albert Wesker bit the dust, they’ve been a bit hit or miss. So here’s hoping Mr. Simon lives up to the hype- if this leak turns out to be the real deal!

STALKER ENEMIES

In the Resident Evil series, characters like Mr. X and Nemesis have evolved into familiar faces such as Jack Baker. These games are renowned for introducing some of the scariest stalker enemies in the survival horror genre. According to leaks about Resident Evil 9 (RE9), it seems that this trend will continue. Allegedly, main characters Leon and Jill will each encounter unique stalker adversaries throughout the game. Unfortunately, details about these enemies are scarce, but there’s a hint that the enemy pursuing Jill might be called the Goat-Man, a fitting name at least.

MAIN ENEMY TYPES

Another interesting claim the leak makes is that zombies – or foes similar enough to zombies – will return as the main enemy type in Resident Evil 9. The island’s residents will supposedly be infected with the Megamycete, which will turn them into ravenous zombie-like creatures, with behaviours ranging from praying to the moon to ravenously running after prey, on top of being able to use different weapons. If this turns out to be accurate, we’re probably going to be looking at something taking cues from Resident Evil 4’s Gonado once again.

SETTING

Regarding the ongoing discussion about the leak, it suggests that Leon and Jill’s mission involves them traveling to an island to investigate a specific company and its operations. However, this journey may expose them to contamination, causing hallucinations of Eveline throughout the game. While this isn’t the first time the Resident Evil series has used an island setting, it seems like this one could offer a variety of experiences. Moving on…

LOCATIONS

According to leaked information from Residence of Evil, it appears that Resident Evil 9’s island setting will offer multiple distinct locations. The leak suggests that during playtests over the past year, Jill has been seen investigating an abandoned forest, while Leon has been navigating through a separate forest. Other presumed locales on the island include residential homes (some of which are deserted), caves, research facilities, a temple, and an abandoned factory. This variety of settings hints at a potentially vast game environment for Resident Evil 9.

OPEN WORLD ELEMENTS

Many dedicated Resident Evil fans may strongly disagree that the series should embrace an open-world format, and there’s certainly validity in their opinions. Nevertheless, whispers suggest that Resident Evil 9 could incorporate some open-world aspects. Back in 2024, a well-known Resident Evil leaker known as Dusk Golem hinted that the technology built for open-world gameplay in RE Engine (used in Dragon’s Dogma 2) might be utilized in Resident Evil 9. This doesn’t necessarily mean it will become an open-world game, but rather, it could potentially offer a broader and more immersive gaming experience compared to its predecessors.

LONGEST RE DEV CYCLE TO DATE

No game – certainly no AAA game – is cheap or easy to make, and sure enough, it goes without saying that Capcom tends to leave no stone unturned with the development of its Resident Evil titles. With RE9, however, it is supposedly going the extra mile, as per the aforementioned Dusk Golem. At different occasions over the last couple of years, the leaker has claimed that Resident Evil 9 has the largest ever development budget for an RE game to date, and by the time it releases, will also have had the longest ever dev cycle for the franchise, having supposedly started back in 2018.
