Resident Evil Requiem – 10 New Things You Must Know

In a year packed with anticipated games such as Grand Theft Auto 6, 007 First Light, and Fable, Resident Evil Requiem is setting the stage as the initial major triple-A release of 2026. Scheduled to debut on February 27th for Xbox Series X/S, PS5, and PC, this survival horror title aims to deliver a heightened horror experience and serve as a farewell tribute to the established series. Here are ten intriguing updates following its recent showcase.

Set 30 Years After Raccoon City’s Destruction

If you found it challenging to understand when the story of Requiem occurs, Tomonori Takano, the art director, has confirmed that it takes place in the year 2028, approximately three decades after Raccoon City’s destruction. It was earlier disclosed that Alyssa Ashcroft passed away eight years before the events of Requiem, which means around the year 2020. However, since a news article written by her was discovered in 2016 (during Resident Evil 7: biohazard), we can now verify that she was still alive at that time.

Addictive Fear

As a gamer, transitioning from the grand, blockbuster-like crossover feel of Resident Evil 6 to the nail-bitingly terrifying Resident Evil 7: biohazard was like catching my breath after a long run – it felt like a complete game changer for the franchise. Director Koshi Nakanishi made it clear that every aspect in biohazard was all about instilling fear, so it’s no wonder he’s focusing on “Addictive Fear” as the central theme for Requiem.

The game intensifies the fundamental dread associated with ‘biohazard’, pushing it to a level where players, despite their terror, find themselves compulsively drawn back, almost addicted to it. It offers incentives to experiment and explore, and when you finally conquer that fear – which aligns with Grace’s personal journey – the feeling of achievement is immense.

Grace’s Character

In my gaming world, I find myself as Grace Ashcroft, a woman tormented by the ghost of my mother’s death. Tasked with unraveling another enigma leading to yet another life-threatening situation, I can’t help but feel the weight of the unknown pressing down on me. Unlike other characters in this series, I’m not your typical action heroine. I’m shy, easily spooked, and far from fearless. However, don’t mistake my timid demeanor for weakness; I won’t cower when danger looms.

As Nakanishi put it, this is the first time we have a character like me in the series – equipped with a handgun, thanks to my FBI agent training, and a flashlight, as depicted in the concept art. My “deductive reasoning” helps keep me grounded amidst chaos, but be prepared for some jump scares that would make even the toughest protagonists flinch.

Takano made it clear that I’m not your typical superhero. Instead, I rely on my own strength to survive, overcoming obstacles and adversaries through grit and determination. So buckle up, fellow gamers – let’s see if Grace Ashcroft can make it out alive in this chilling mystery!

Even More Stalker Sightings

Previously, we’ve explored how the new stalker in the series, who persistently follows Grace around the hotel, exhibits intelligence and immense size. It emerges from gaps in the ceiling and even scouts locations where she might conceal herself. What makes this entity even more astounding is its ability to manipulate rather than aggressively hunt, often turning off lights instead of charging into rooms immediately. The Creator’s Message particularly emphasizes the creature’s size when it descends from a ceiling opening in one continuous movement, obstructing the corridor before fully standing up. In another instance, the stalker slowly tracks her, crouching as it traverses the hallway. The fact that we haven’t yet seen its ultimate form adds to both the intrigue and terror of the scenario.

Metal and Noir

In essence, Takano detailed the aesthetic theme for the team’s project: “Metal and Noir,” which blends classic film noir elements with contemporary suspense and metal imagery, mirrored effects included. The “metal” component sets a distinct contrast to the backdrops of previous series like biohazard and Village, as Requiem is set in an urban landscape. Takano further noted that there will be multiple scenarios unfolding as a “modern drama,” with Raccoon City being one of them. Whether this implies additional locations for players to explore or not, the visual narrative will heavily feature iron and metal as recurring themes.

Graphical Fidelity and Enhanced Realism

The overall quality of “Resident Evil Requiem” surpasses its predecessors, notably in intricate details. For instance, when Grace hangs upside down from the medical gurney, her iris and cheeks blush, and her eye movements are more nuanced and realistic. Previously mentioned aspects like the skin textures and “high-definition sweat droplets” showcase quality, but another feature stands out in showcasing Grace’s character: Her hair.

As Takano walked around with a lighter, it cast a lifelike glow. However, there’s more to uncover. It was disclosed that a skilled wig maker was employed to craft a wig uniquely for Grace. For instances where Grace is suspended upside down, the wig was also flipped, offering the team an insight into its in-game appearance. Remarkably, when they failed to achieve the desired visual standard, they utilized a feature called Strand, which the Pragmata team had been developing for android Diana’s hair. This technology also enhances Grace’s hair to appear incredibly lifelike.

Where is Leon?

Speculation persists regarding Leon’s role in the game titled “Requiem” and his significance being comparable to Grace. Interestingly, Nakanishi shared that the team had often considered Leon as the main character, but creating a horror game around him proved challenging due to his unsuitable nature for horror settings. Despite this, the choice of Grace as the protagonist doesn’t necessarily exclude Leon. He might be part of one of the “numerous storylines” mentioned by Takano, but there could be additional reasons behind his (and other recurring characters’) reappearance. Further details on this will follow soon.

Experiments With Online and Open World

It’s surprising that the main point of intrigue in the extended Creator’s Message comes from Nakanishi validating whispers about the team working on online-only and open-world concepts. These ideas had been under development for a while, but it turned out that fans weren’t interested in them, leading the team to reconsider their approach. As a result, we have Requiem, which is what they ultimately decided to produce. This aligns with previous reports from insider Aesthetic Gamer (also known as Dusk Golem), who hinted at an open world and some multiplayer elements before a significant revamp in 2021. Therefore, the emphasis is on creating a single-player offline game.

Why Return to Raccoon City?

During an interview with PlayStation Blog, producer Masato Kumazawa outlined the rationale behind revisiting Raccoon City. While games like “biohazard” and “Village” expanded the universe as a whole, “Requiem” is centered on reconnecting with the larger narrative of the franchise. Given that Raccoon City played a pivotal role in numerous significant events, it was also deemed an ideal location since the series marks its 30th anniversary in March 2026.

A “Eulogy” for Past Characters

As a devoted fan, I find the title “Requiem” to hold multiple layers of significance, as elucidated by Kumazawa. For me, it symbolizes Grace’s journey towards confronting her fears and potentially leaving behind the grief of her mother’s passing. Yet, it also serves as a poignant tribute to all those who were entangled in the Raccoon City catastrophe, with Nakanishi referring to it as a “eulogy for the fallen.” In essence, “Requiem” marks a significant landmark within this series, and if whispers are true that it’s the final title before a soft reboot for the next game, we may witness the return of cherished characters or perhaps see them influence the narrative in some way. Regardless, I am confident that upon completing the game, players will uncover even deeper layers of meaning.
