Capcom unveiled “Resident Evil: Requiem,” the upcoming main installment of their survival horror series, which has left fans quite eager. Despite this year’s Summer Game Fest presentation not being its finest hour, the unveiling of RE: Requiem certainly added some excitement to the event. Even though we still have much to learn about the game, based on the official details, there are already several things on our wishlist – and it seems that many other fans share this sentiment, which is what we’ll be discussing here.
NEW AND FAMILIAR LOCATIONS
There’s plenty to be thrilled about for any gaming enthusiast when it comes to the upcoming “Resident Evil” game, but “Resident Evil Requiem” in particular has really stirred up excitement among series fans due to several reasons. The most significant one being a revisit to Raccoon City, a location that was instrumental in “Resident Evil 2” and “3”. Interestingly, the city was obliterated at the end of the latter game, yet it has continued to loom large in the narrative of “Resident Evil”. In the case of “Requiem”, we’re not just revisiting Raccoon City symbolically; we’re physically going back to it.
We’re eagerly anticipating a diverse blend of old and fresh settings in the game. The unveiling trailer offered brief glimpses of the devastated RPD building, and we’re hoping for more such scenes, perhaps the hospital, the orphanage, or even the sewers. Revisiting these locations decades after the incidents in Resident Evil 2 and 3 and witnessing their transformation following the city’s nuclear attack promises to be intriguing. Yet, we also yearn for a wealth of new locales as we don’t want Requiem to merely be a post-nuclear journey through nostalgia.
FAMILIAR MONSTERS
In the spirit of Resident Evil’s signature style of unleashing chilling and lasting enemies upon its viewers, our anticipation for what Requiem will offer is undeniably high. We eagerly await details about the new horrors it promises to present, but we also yearn for a glimpse of some classic monsters. As Requiem transports us back to Raccoon City, we’re hoping it will revive some familiar adversaries from that area. From the Lickers and sewer beasts of Resident Evil 2 to the Hunters and Pale Heads of Resident Evil 3, there are several creature types we wouldn’t mind encountering again – perhaps they’ve even evolved and transformed over the time that has passed.
A STALKER ENEMY
Stalking enemies can be tricky to execute well, but the Resident Evil series has often excelled at this element. Characters like Mr. X in Resident Evil 2, Nemesis in the original RE3, Jack Baker in Resident Evil 7, and Lady Dimitrescu in Resident Evil Village have made the game frighteningly intense. So, we’re eagerly anticipating more of this type of experience in Resident Evil Requiem. Ideally, there will be scenes or even a significant portion of the game where the developers decide to ramp up the tension by introducing a persistent and terrifying enemy that chases the player.
FOLLOW UP ON OLD THREADS
As Resident Evil: Requiem makes its way back to Raccoon City, devoted series enthusiasts are undoubtedly anticipating the game will revisit certain storylines from the past. In fact, it appears quite likely that the game will delve into these narrative threads. Considering the city was obliterated by a nuclear blast, it’s reasonable to suppose that most of the inhabitants and locations were affected, but that doesn’t rule out the possibility of intriguing tales or hidden details emerging nonetheless. For example, what happened to the Umbrella lab buried so deeply beneath the surface after the nuke? Were any of the side characters we encountered in Raccoon City during RE2 and 3 among those who managed to survive in ways yet undiscovered? Even if it’s just through Easter eggs or brief snippets of backstory, Requiem could link back to RE2 and RE3 in some engaging ways.
TIES TO OTHER RESIDENT EVIL TITLES
In the game “Resident Evil Requiem,” there are clear links to “Resident Evil 2” and “3”, as well as the “Outbreak” series, since the protagonist, Grace Ashcroft, is the daughter of Alyssa, a main character from “Outbreak.” We’re eagerly anticipating Capcom unveiling more connections to other games in the series. Fans of “Resident Evil” appreciate the series most when it continues to develop and expand its lore while introducing fresh elements, so we hope there are stronger ties to other “RE” titles yet to be unearthed. For example, “Resident Evil 6” shed light on significant narrative details concerning Raccoon City’s bombing- could these details reemerge in “Requiem,” with Raccoon City potentially playing a role again?
A CLEARER VIEW OF THE CURRENT TIMELINE
Recently, the timeline of the Resident Evil series has sparked some intriguing debates. The ending of Resident Evil Village takes place around the year 2037, which is also when the Shadows of Rose expansion is set. However, it’s unclear where the upcoming game, Requiem, will fit into this timeline. According to its trailer, protagonist Grace’s mother passed away eight years ago. A note found in Resident Evil 7 suggests that she was still actively working as a journalist up until at least 2016. This implies that Requiem might be set between 2024 and the present day, but this is not yet definitively known. We hope to learn more about its placement within the timeline in the near future.
FBI RESOURCES
Grace Ashcroft, the main character in Resident Evil Requiem, has been officially confirmed as an FBI agent. This should add an intriguing twist to the gameplay. Maybe she’ll have specialized tools and unexpected weapons at her disposal, supplied by the FBI, unlike a character such as Ethan Winters. Unique gadgets or firearms could introduce exciting possibilities for exploration and combat.
CONTINUED FOCUS ON HORROR
One aspect we’re eager for Resident Evil Requiem not to skimp on is the terrifying elements. Given that our protagonist is an FBI agent (who doesn’t appear to be a super-soldier), there’s a potential risk of the game leaning too heavily towards action (based on initial impressions). However, the Resident Evil series has made this mistake in the past, so it’s crucial that they avoid repeating those errors. Thankfully, Capcom appears to be focusing on horror with Requiem, which gives us hope for the game’s overall atmosphere. At this point, we’re optimistic about the direction things are headed.
THIRD PERSON GAMEPLAY
In recent years, the gameplay of Resident Evil has alternated between first and third person perspectives, and both styles have brought about impressive success. However, we’re eager for Resident Evil Requiem to revert to a third-person viewpoint. Although we look forward to returning to first-person Resident Evil gameplay someday, we believe that a third-person perspective similar to the earlier games like Resident Evil 2 and 3 would be a fitting choice for Resident Evil Requiem and its apparent objectives.
