Return to Paradise creator reveals tricky challenge of creating puzzles for such engaged fans

As someone who has spent countless hours immersed in detective shows, I find myself captivated by the intricate and challenging nature of “Return to Paradise.” The co-creator Peter Mattessi’s words resonate deeply with me, as I too have felt the pressure of crafting a puzzle that keeps viewers engaged while remaining fair.

The new show, “Return to Paradise,” follows closely after popular detective series “Death in Paradise” and “Beyond Paradise.” Given that it’s part of the same fictional world, it’s expected to pique the interest of fans who are deeply invested in these shows.

Peter Mattessi, a co-creator of Return to Paradise, has openly acknowledged the challenging nature of writing for an intensely involved audience, describing it as “a nightmarish experience”.

Before the UK premiere of the Australian series, Mattessi commented: “Let me tell you, composing for this genre is often a nightmare. I’m still haunted by memories of brainstorming sessions in the script room, struggling to find ways to make these puzzles work effectively.

“You have to be mindful of that, because they won’t forgive you if you get it wrong.”

In my perspective as a movie critic, I’d say: “A good mystery should keep the audience guessing but not leave them feeling frustrated or deceived. If it’s too simple, they might find it underwhelming. But if it’s too complex and the detective seems to be pulling solutions out of thin air in the final scene, viewers could feel misled. The sweet spot is a well-crafted, engaging puzzle that keeps the audience engaged until the very end.

To maintain fairness, ensure that the clues essential for your detective’s investigation are not exclusively available to them, but also accessible to your audience.

My hope is that after each case, our main detective Mackenzie Clarke reveals the solution, and viewers think to themselves, ‘I should’ve seen that coming. The answer was clearly there, yet I overlooked it.’

In the latest show, we find Anna Samson playing the role of Detective Inspector (DI) Mackenzie Clarke, a native Australian who, after residing and working in London for several years, is drawn back to her small-town roots against her will.

As a passionate cinephile, I’ve just discovered that the latest ‘Paraverse’ series stands out distinctly from its predecessors. It captures the original’s charm and warmth, yet it’s far from being a mere replica. Instead, it’s like savoring a familiar flavor with a subtle twist that makes it uniquely delicious.

Joining Samson on screen are Tai Hara, Lloyd Griffith, Catherine McClements, Celia Ireland, Andrea Demetriades, and Aaron McGrath.
