Return to Paradise officer confused after awkward encounter with lead detective

As a devoted Death in Paradise enthusiast who has eagerly anticipated each new season like a child waiting for Christmas, I must say that the announcement of Return to Paradise has sent waves of excitement coursing through me. Having spent countless hours immersed in the tropical paradise of Saint Marie, I can’t help but feel a sense of nostalgia as I embark on this new journey back to the familiar yet foreign landscape of Dolphin Cove, Australia.

Fans eagerly anticipating the Christmas special of Death in Paradise this year can rejoice, as it appears that Christmas has arrived ahead of schedule!

The reason for that is because a fresh spin-off titled “Return to Paradise” debuts tonight on BBC One, taking place within the same world as the original series. We have an exclusive first glimpse of the show here in the UK.

In this scene, we witness the initial encounter between the newly appointed detective, Mackenzie Clarke (portrayed by Anna Samson), and her colleague, Detective Colin Cartwright (played by Lloyd Griffith).

In Australia, where Colin, originally from Britain, now resides, he’s found himself delving into the murder case of popular real estate agent, Stuart. Currently, he’s grilling Grant, a resident mechanic, about the incident. However, Mackenzie suddenly barges in.

She’s resided in London, serving with the Metropolitan Police, but due to a controversy, she finds herself returning to her hometown of Dolphin Cove, which results in an uncomfortable meeting between her and Colin, as neither were aware of each other’s presence.

In addition to Samson and Griffith, the latest series also features actors such as Tai Hara, Catherine McClements, Celia Ireland, Andrea Demetriades, and Aaron McGrath.

The series maintains several classic elements from the ‘Paraverse’ universe – an out-of-place detective, regular murders, and a visually captivating setting. However, co-creator James Hall emphasizes that they aimed to avoid simply replicating ‘Death in Paradise’.

He mentioned that from the beginning, both he and Red Planet Pictures were determined to ensure that the Australia spin-off wouldn’t resemble Death in Paradise in terms of appearance or atmosphere. Unlike the series where the fish-out-of-water detective is a British police officer who ends up working overseas unexpectedly, our detective character would not be another English officer in this new setting.

So, our decision to make the detective an Australian native, back from a long absence, came quite swiftly. It was then that we realized immediately that this story should be titled ‘Return to Paradise.’

Although DI Mackenzie Clarke was born and raised in Dolphin Cove, her dislike for the place and lack of feeling at home persist, making her an outsider, much like other detectives on Death in Paradise. Furthermore, her departure from Dolphin Cove several years ago has left a sour taste with many residents, who are not welcoming to her return.
