Moving forward, the most recent Agatha Christie novel brought to life by the BBC, titled “Towards Zero,” delves into the aftermath of a high-profile celebrity divorce that takes a lethal turn.
As a devoted movie enthusiast, I find myself reflecting on the captivating tale of tennis sensation Neville Strange. Once deeply connected to his childhood love, Audrey, he’s now embarked on a new journey with Kay Elliot as his wife. However, when our trio gathers at Gull’s Point – their shared, cherished home from days gone by – under the ever-vigilant gaze of Aunt Lady Tressilian, tensions between Neville and Audrey escalate to a boiling point, threatening to shatter the fragile peace that once existed.
As a film enthusiast, let me share that Gull’s Point serves as the residence of the remarkable Lady Tressilian – an imposing figure hailing from the Edwardian era.
At Gull’s Point, it’s a more traditional and refined atmosphere. Conversely, the Easterhead Bay Hotel [located across the bay] offers a lively escape, filled with music, dancing, revelry, and youths who are embracing life following the aftermath of the Great War.
However, you might be wondering, precisely, where Gull’s Point can be found. To provide more clarity, here are some details about the shooting locations of the drama.
Towards Zero filming locations
A significant portion of the series was captured on the scenic Burgh Island, located near Bigbury-on-Sea in the southern part of Devon. This is the very place where Agatha Christie resided and spent much of her time during her childhood years, as mentioned by executive producer James Prichard.
He mentioned that this place is likely a significant source of inspiration for these stories, although they are not all physically based here. However, it resides within her imaginative world.
Prichard also thinks that the novel “Towards Zero” was likely influenced by her home in Devon, Greenway, as the nearby river seems fitting for this story and carries a similar atmosphere.
Christie spent her early years at Ashfield, a Victorian manor in Torquay, residing there until her marriage. Later, she returned to Ashfield upon the birth of her child.
After residing in several homes, one being Greenway – a Georgian property – located in Galmpton, another special place for her was Burgh Island, which she often regarded as a second home.
Christie frequently vacationed at that location and it was also the backdrop for two of her books, “Evil under the Sun” and “And Then There Were None.

Prichard continued by explaining that “Towards Zero” heavily emphasizes the geographical aspects, both in its narrative structure and in its unexpected turns.
He noted that the house plays a significant role in the narrative, almost like a major player. It holds meaning for individuals, serving as a gathering spot where relationships are formed and events unfold.
Adam Hugill, who portrays Mac (Nevile’s valet), additionally verified that we weren’t working on a typical studio lot.
He stated that we were enveloped in an authentic atmosphere, an accurate environment. Everything was available to us, making it incredibly immersive and flawless since we wore the costumes and were within the actual rooms.
When not in Devon, the team was stationed primarily in Bristol and its vicinity. Meanwhile, Neston Park, located near Corsham in Wiltshire, stood in as Lady Tressilian’s grand estate.
