Lydia McLaughlin is finding some solace in tragedy.
As she paid tribute to her late brother Geoffrey “Geoff” Stirling Jr., who tragically lost his life in a police encounter after a traffic stop, the former star of Real Housewives of Orange County opened up about what helps her cope with her persistent sorrow.
Yesterday, I bid farewell to my beloved brother. It was only half a year ago that we were here, mourning the loss of my mother. Lydia, aged 44, shared these thoughts on Instagram May 5, accompanied by a picture of her brother and a video of our family releasing doves at the cemetery. “My heart is shattered, and the numbness I feel hasn’t eased yet.
Although I’m deeply saddened, there’s something I firmly believe: goodness resides in God, and He governs everything. My brother has joined my mother, and I find solace in the belief that we’ll meet again someday. Until then, I’ll cherish them daily with every fiber of my being.
On April 17th, a tragic incident occurred in Southern California where Geoff lost his life after an encounter with the police during a routine traffic stop that led to him being fatally shot.
Following the stop, Stirling grew uncooperative and physically attacked the police officer, according to a statement from Newport Beach Police Department on April 18. In the subsequent physical confrontation, Stirling managed to take the officer’s department-issued taser from his belt and attempted to use it against the officer several times. This led to an incident involving an officer discharging their firearm.
As per the report, Geoff was transported to the hospital due to his injuries. Sadly, the doctors confirmed his demise at the hospital. He was 45 years old.
Several days following the funeral, the Newport Beach Police Department disclosed bodycam footage related to the incident. They shared this video with KABC-TV on May 7, explaining that making it available to the public is a component of their continuous endeavors to keep the community up-to-date and involved.
After the video’s publication, Geoff’s family, represented by their lawyer, issued a statement saying they intend to initiate a federal lawsuit against the police department. The statement asserts that the video suggests Geoff was retreating from the police before his demise.
According to their lawyers, the family intends to bring a lawsuit in Federal Court to get complete answers and demand justice, as stated on May 7 to KABC-TV. The incident occurred when Geoff, who was suffering from a mental health crisis, was pulled over for a traffic violation. It’s important to note that he was not armed and posed no immediate threat to the officer.
The Stirling family intends to keep all video, audio recordings, reports, and any other relevant evidence concerning this distressing incident for future use in their upcoming legal case. They stated that the cause of death was excessive bleeding, yet when multiple officers arrived at the scene, no immediate assistance was provided.
And they emphasized that Stirling’s death was preventable.
The family is still grief-stricken and shattered, as they believe Geoff was unfairly taken from them through excessive force. It’s also heartbreaking that the officer might not have explored alternative methods or techniques during the situation, given his training.
