As a long-time wrestling fan and follower of John Cena’s illustrious career, I can’t help but be in awe of his incredible accomplishments. When I heard that Cena tied Ric Flair’s record for the most professional wrestling world championship reigns at WWE Royal Rumble 2017, I was blown away. It’s not every day that we get to witness history being made right before our eyes.
John Cena made history by matching Ric Flair’s record of 16 professional wrestling world championship reigns at the 2017 WWE Royal Rumble. By defeating AJ Styles, Cena equaled Flair’s achievement, with all his titles being under the WWE umbrella – 13 WWE Titles and three WWE World Heavyweight Championships. However, this title reign lasted only 14 days as he lost to Bray Wyatt at the WWE Elimination Chamber event. Since then, Cena has attempted to regain the WWE championship on three occasions, but has been unsuccessful in each attempt.
Ric Flair Encourages John Cena to Break His Title Record
The Nature Boy is in favor of Big Match John eclipsing his immortal statistic.
During an interview on “Busted Open Radio,” Ric Flair replied “no problem at all” when questioned about John Cena claiming a 17th world championship title, surpassing Flair’s previous record.
In my own words, I deeply admire John Cena. He’s an exceptional individual, as far as I’m concerned, and I’ve had the chance to meet a few like him. If Cena is involved, I have no objections at all. I would be among the first to enter the ring and greet him warmly. They were made to be shattered.
Flair amassed numerous championship titles throughout his career, with a grand total of 16 being recognized for the world record: he held the NWA Worlds Heavyweight Championship title eight times, the WCW World Heavyweight Championship six times, and the WWF Championship belt twice.
Regarding Cena’s feelings about potentially shattering the long-standing record, he admitted that he must first prove himself worthy of the chance.
“I greatly look forward to seizing that chance. Earning such chances takes effort. Considering my previous achievements, I have some ground to cover. As it stands, I haven’t won a televised singles match since 2018, Cena admitted at the WWE Money in the Bank post-show presser. Thus, I acknowledge the need to climb back up from the bottom. Realistically, there are certain opportunities out there, and with a bit of luck on my side, we could create something truly remarkable. Regardless, I’m eager for the journey ahead.”
The first episode of Netflix’s “WWE Monday Night Raw” is set to mark the beginning of Cena’s retirement tour.
