As a seasoned movie critic with a penchant for festive films, I must say that Richard Curtis has truly mastered the art of Christmas cinematography. From Love Actually to Bridget Jones and now That Christmas, he seamlessly weaves tales of love, laughter, and holiday spirit. His unique ability to capture the essence of Christmas – the joy, the chaos, and the occasional disaster – is simply enchanting.
Why does the king of Christmas films want to reboot the big day?
TopMob spoke to screenwriting maestro Richard Curtis about all things festive.
Why does Christmas play such a significant role in many of your movies, like Love Actually, Bridget Jones, and That Christmas?
In the world of sitcoms, there’s a longstanding custom of producing Christmas specials. During the days when Rowan Atkinson and I were brainstorming skits, we often found ourselves writing about characters such as headmasters, politicians, and clergy – individuals in formal settings ripe for mishaps. It seems that Christmas, with its potential for chaos, provides the perfect backdrop for such situations. Moreover, it serves as an excellent deadline, as it presents a unique opportunity to conclude multiple stories simultaneously. The idea of setting Love Actually during Christmas came to me only partway through the writing phase, when I was pondering how to wrap up all these narratives at once.
Where will you be at Christmas?
In our home located in Suffolk, we celebrate Christmas communally. Growing up, my family moved around a lot, living in New Zealand, the Philippines, Sweden, and two different spots in England. However, for the past 20 years, we’ve been spending Christmases in the same village, and approximately 30 of us gather together to enjoy lunch in a barn.
Just like the families in That Christmas?
I wasn’t expecting that scenario! I thought they’d choose a classic black-and-white Christmas film from the 40s or 50s, like Miracle on 34th Street. Instead, I found myself in a situation where kids were watching what they call a “tedious Christmas movie,” and it turned out to be Love Actually. To my surprise, I found it quite entertaining, and realized that modern children likely wouldn’t prefer the classic American film over Love Actually; therefore, it had a ring of truth. While not many families may opt for a 1950s American movie today, there are probably quite a few who would rather be watching Gremlins instead of Love Actually.
Including Hugh Grant?
I wish him nothing but joy and happiness.
Are you pleased that so many people make Love Actually part of their festive celebrations?
Reflecting on it now, it seems like we pulled off a miracle when editing Love Actually. For quite some time, we felt it was a catastrophe in the making. Looking back, I’m amazed that we managed to succeed despite the initial challenges!
Do you often feel that way about your work?
Reflecting back, I recall seeing Notting Hill and having the thought, “This feels strikingly similar to Four Weddings!” Without me realizing at the time, it turned out to be a group of friends’ story, with a female lead from America, and concluded on a positive note.
What will your family be watching when you’re holed up in Suffolk?
Here are three Christmas movies that I adore: “A Charlie Brown Christmas” features a charming cast of children and basic animation, with enigmatic and quintessentially American voices. It’s truly a masterpiece. When I was young, I cherished “White Christmas” due to my father’s admiration for Bing Crosby, and its timeless Irving Berlin tunes. Lastly, “Elf” holds a special place in my heart, as it’s hard to believe Will Ferrell wasn’t awarded an Oscar for his performance in this delightful film.
Do you still believe in the magic of Christmas?
There’s a multitude of enigmas surrounding the holiday season of Christmas. Brussels sprouts have regained popularity, yet they tend to ruin the festive meal. Additionally, what’s with the tradition of eating only turkey? For many, it’s the sole occasion throughout the year when they attend church or attempt a family stroll with 15 people. It seems Christmas could benefit from a modern update.
