The long-awaited Season 8 of “Rick and Morty” is upon us, and having previewed several episodes, I found myself in a thoughtful predicament. On one side, it was an assemblage of episodes that had me rolling with laughter, evoked memories of excellent science fiction films, and demonstrated that the series remains vibrant and energetic. However, on the other hand, I couldn’t help but feel that many of the ongoing storylines I had been following were conspicuously absent from this season.

I won’t reveal any spoilers about future events, since I haven’t finished watching the entire season yet. There might be some exciting developments, like discovering which character is actually Beth or seeing the return of Mr. Poopybutthole as a villain. However, those moments weren’t present in the episodes I did watch. But I’ve come to terms with it and am enjoying the series for what it offers in each episode.

Initially, when the duration of the show was unclear, it may have appeared more practical to adhere to a continuous narrative structure. Now, however, Rick and Morty has become one of the most-watched animated series globally, and it seems Adult Swim is giving them the go-ahead for as many seasons as they desire.

It’s challenging to stick with a continuous narrative when you’re unsure about the final episode of your series, as seen in shows like ‘Doctor Who’, where The Doctor’s home planet has been destroyed, resurrected, and then destroyed again. ‘Rick and Morty’, too, might face this issue if it continues to produce serialized episodes at its earlier pace. Over time, major plot developments may lose their impact without a definitive ending to provide closure for the storyline.

Like So Many Other Animated Shows, Rick And Morty Can Live On Indefinitely Through Parody And Riffing

The limited episodes of “Rick and Morty” Season 8 that I’ve watched have demonstrated that this show truly shines when it plays with humor, often imitating classic sci-fi films or exaggerating their iconic elements to the utmost extent. Since “Futurama,” no other sci-fi series has managed to achieve this level of satire, and while I’m a devotee of “Futurama” as well, it seems fair to say that “Rick and Morty” may be able to explore more daring territory than the Matt Groening creation ever did.

Looking ahead, the 2025 movie lineup is filled with films that could become targets for parody at some point in the future. Since Rick and Morty still have at least two more seasons coming up, it might take some time before they tackle these new releases. However, given the never-ending nature of their series, there’s a good chance they’ll eventually address them if they prove to be worthy targets for parody.

Given the endless supply of science fiction movies and shows that can serve as targets for their satire, it seems like a smart move for “Rick and Morty” to continue its run indefinitely, keeping it relevant far into the future. As long as it maintains its reputation for cleverly mocking some of the most cherished works in the genre, it will always have a place on both television and streaming platforms.

Continuing To Commit To Some Endgame Would Just Hurt Creative Storytelling If There’s No Plan To End The Series

When the television show “Rick and Morty” appeared to conclude the Evil Morty arc in Season 7, I must admit I felt quite disappointed. It seemed there were still important aspects of the character to explore, similar to my earlier dissatisfaction when Rick caught up with and exacted revenge on Rick Prime. However, having watched a portion of Season 8 and realizing that the series doesn’t need to immediately develop another grand storyline with high-stakes consequences, I can now understand the direction that the Adult Swim program was heading in.

Admittedly, I didn’t require seeing the vision because Rick made clear in an episode that the show would take a more episodic approach. This decision stirred intense discussions within the fanbase, and after being a staunch advocate for more serialized episodes for so long, I am now prepared to acknowledge my error in judgment regarding its superiority.

It’s clear that “Rick and Morty” has reached an elite level in animation, especially considering they are working on Season 8 and have already begun writing for Season 10. This kind of simultaneous production is usually a sign that the show is joining the ranks of legendary animated series like “The Simpsons,” “Family Guy,” and “Bob’s Burgers.” What makes this even more remarkable is that they are achieving this on a different network, yet Adult Swim’s programming block has undeniably earned its own place among animation greats.

The ongoing discussion among long-time Rick and Morty fans about whether the show is episodic or serialized will likely resurface when Season 8 starts. However, based on how smoothly the show has moved towards becoming more episodic, I anticipate this trend to continue into Seasons 9, 10, and beyond, potentially reaching their goal of a hundred seasons.
