Spaceballs is coming back with Rick Moranis…and Josh Gad.
Gazing upon a sea of celestial bodies, the surging symphony of an epic orchestral theme, the sloping text vanishing into the cosmic abyss as we delve into the chronicles of the Star Wars saga, heralds the arrival of a much-anticipated endeavor.
Spaceballs 2: The Schwartz Awakens

Following a report by Deadline stating that Amazon MGM studios are deeply involved in cinema and plan to release all their 2026 films without withholding any content, Mel Brooks officially announced the upcoming 2027 release of the much-anticipated sequel to his 1987 sci-fi comedy “Spaceballs”.
Following Mel Brooks’ signature humor, the trailer satirically criticizes today’s movies by featuring an abundance of sequels, prequels, and even prequels to sequels. The clip ends with a 99-year-old Mel Brooks, sporting a Spaceballs: The Sweatshirt, engaging in conversation directly with the camera. In this new installment, Brooks reprises his role as the wise Yogurt, guiding the film’s characters towards a deeper comprehension of the schwartz and the true revenue source of movies – merchandising.
I told you we’d be back

For quite some time now, there have been whispers about a second Spaceballs film. Back in 2013, Moranis hinted that it might be titled “Spaceballs III: The Quest for Lost Spaceballs II.” However, when this didn’t materialize, Brooks expressed his interest in a follow-up named “Spaceballs II: The Hunt for More Funds,” which he planned to debut following the next Star Wars film (specifically, The Force Awakens at that time).
That too didn’t happen.
It seems that Brooks has been contemplating sequels and spinoffs, but not for his own work. Contrary to the teaser’s suggestion, there was indeed more than just one Spaceballs, as a 15-episode animated series titled “Spaceballs: The Animated Series” was aired on G4 in 2008.

Although Brooks is receiving a lot of praise for his involvement, it’s crucial to note that he isn’t penning this second installment. Conspicuously absent from the current buzz is Josh Gad (known for his role in Frozen), who has officially been cast as both writer and actor in the upcoming Spaceballs sequel. Brooks will only serve as a producer, while he will once again take on the character of Yogurt.
Excitedly, I share the latest updates! It’s confirmed that Bill Pullman, renowned for his role as Lone Star, will reprise it. Keke Palmer, famously known from ‘Nope’, has been cast, though her character details remain a mystery. The plot thickened with the unexpected addition of Lewis Pullman from ‘Top Gun: Maverick’, joining his father in an unspecified role. However, the most thrilling tidbit for many is the return of Rick Moranis as Dark Helmet!

In the late ’70s and throughout the ’80s, Rick Moranis was a popular face in comedy. However, following the tragic death of his wife, Ann Belsky, due to cancer in 1991, he chose to retreat from public life to devote time to raising his children. During the ’90s, he made occasional family movies, and after 2000, he did some voice-over work. His last significant appearance might have been noticed by dedicated fans in late 2020 when he became a victim of senseless violence during the trend of the knockout game. Ironically, this incident occurred just minutes away from the apartment building where his character, Lewis Tully, resided in the 1984 hit movie, Ghostbusters.
In a unique portrayal, the unforgettable John Candy (1950-1994) played Barf, a mixed breed of man and dog, in the initial Spaceballs film. As of now, there’s no information available about who might take on this role if it were to be recast in the future.

The movie titled “Spaceballs 2: The Schwartz Awakens” is being referred to as a “sequel with reboot elements, not exactly a prequel or a remake but part two with some expansion of the franchise,” according to those who have not yet read the script. Josh Greenbaum, known for directing “Strays,” will be at the helm based on a screenplay co-written by Josh Gad and the team behind “Pokemon: Detective Pikachu” and “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem.
Earlier, Josh Gad collaborated with Mel Brooks on the contentious film “History of the World, Part II,” where he portrayed Shakespeare. Additionally, it has been announced that he will be featured alongside Rick Moranis in the forthcoming production titled “Shrunk,” which marks a new installment in the “Honey, I Shrunk the Kids” series. This project is set to be helmed by Joe Johnston.
