Rick & Morty Season 8 Premiere Reveals Shocking Truth About Rick Sanchez After 12 Years

Heed this notice: The article ahead encompasses SPOILERS for Rick and Morty season 8, episode 1, “Summer of All Fears”. As a dedicated fan, I must share that Rick Sanchez, a pivotal character in the Rick and Morty universe since the show’s inception, experienced an unsettling truth in the premiere. Accompanied by Morty, Rick has been the starring figure in this animated series, and their joint role has given rise to many of its most memorable moments. Not only has he played a significant part in the finest episodes of Rick and Morty, but the narrative relies heavily upon him, as Rick serves as the driving force behind most adventures, thus underscoring his indispensable role in transforming the series into one of Adult Swim’s top-rated projects.

One thing that makes Rick such an engaging character is his flaws. Among all the main characters, he stands out as the most morally ambiguous, and his self-absorbed nature frequently leads to complications. Yet, he possesses numerous admirable traits that keep viewers engaged with him, which is crucial for making him relatable. Even though Rick and Morty has evolved over its seasons, Rick continues to stay true to his character despite going through significant growth, but his stubbornness also underscores a harsh truth about the protagonist. In the episode titled “Summer of All Fears,” this major flaw is exposed yet again.

“Summer Of All Fears” Proves Rick Will Never Overcome His Worst Traits

Rick’s Over-The-Top Punishment Highlights That His Biggest Flaws Still Exist After 8 Seasons

In all honesty, despite Rick’s many charming attributes, “Summer of All Fears” has left me convinced that his most frustrating traits will be lifelong. Despite the wild escapades with my family and the countless brushes with death we’ve managed to survive, Rick’s pettiness remains unshakable, and this was vividly demonstrated in season 8’s opener. Instead of delivering a stern lecture or engaging in a more substantial discussion about how aggravating it is that they constantly pilfer my phone charger, Rick escalated the situation drastically by subjecting Morty and Summer to an intricate simulation.

In an attempt to impart a valuable lesson about phone charger theft, I immersed Morty and Summer in a virtual world designed around this topic. Spending a day or two within this simulated reality could have served as a harsh yet fair punishment. Regrettably, due to an unintentional oversight on my part, they were trapped there for the equivalent of 17 years, causing immense psychological distress. For Summer, this digital detour led to a successful career as a tech CEO within the matrix, but readjusting to life as a high school student proved incredibly challenging.

In the same vein, the bond between Rick and Morty grew increasingly strained as Morty suffered from PTSD following his experiences in wars and repeated deaths within a simulation. The fact that Rick continues to wreak havoc on his grandchildren’s lives, merely because they caused him a minor hassle, underscores some deeply problematic character traits he has yet to overcome. With eight seasons under our belt, it appears these negative qualities will remain, further highlighting the complex and contentious nature of Rick Sanchez.

Rick Still Loves Morty & Summer Despite His Extreme Lessons

He Has Risked His Life For His Grandchildren On Numerous Occasions

Although Rick appears to be harsh and neglectful towards his grandchildren at times, it’s important to remember that he has a deep affection for Morty and Summer. Despite the occasional harsh lessons or cynical behavior, Rick has demonstrated acts of great kindness towards the Smith family, especially Morty and Summer, showing that they are close to his heart. This may not always be apparent, but it’s clear that he is willing to risk his life for them and put himself in danger on their behalf.

In “A Rickle in Time”, Rick choked up when viewing footage of Morty maturing, and even sacrificed himself for his grandson. However, despite this episode showcasing some of Rick’s most significant weaknesses, it was revealed that he aimed to erase the trauma from Summer and Morty’s minds, an objective he ultimately accomplished by the end of the episode. Although Rick occasionally oversteps boundaries, he typically acknowledges his mistakes and endeavors to rectify them, demonstrating that his affection for his grandchildren is genuine in “Rick and Morty”.
