It’s often underestimated, but the Riddler stands among Batman’s most formidable adversaries. His mental prowess outmatches even that of Batman and Oracle, as they themselves acknowledge. Unlike other villains, the Riddler relishes the challenge of pitting his criminal mastermind against the World’s Greatest Detective. Each encounter between them, be it in the “Zero Year” or “Hush” storylines, tests Batman to the brink and sometimes beyond, demonstrating the depth of the Riddler’s cunning. Now, he poses a threat in an unprecedented manner.

In his last appearance, two issues back from the end of Chip Zdarsky’s tenure on Batman, the Riddler sported a revised version of his classic outfit. His attire bore similarities to tech moguls and Silicon Valley entrepreneurs, with a green suit and neatly combed hair. This was a fresh take, but one that still echoed the essence of the Riddler’s character. He appeared as a menacing yet wealthy nerd, more of a thinker than a fighter.

However, in Batman #159, during the “H2SH” storyline, the Riddler has made a return with a redesign that hints at a possible transformation for his character.

The Riddler, formerly known as a weak and cowardly villain who relied on his henchmen, has undergone a significant transformation in appearance and demeanor. He now boasts an impressive physique, suggesting he’s ready for hand-to-hand combat at any moment. His cane is gripped tightly, as if it might become a weapon at any second. Notably, his knuckles are spiked, adding to his intimidating appearance. Instead of dressing in formal attire, this Riddler dons military-style clothing, complete with a heavy jacket and pants that appear more suitable for a marine than an office worker. He also wears armor strips, combat boots, and has a buzz cut, with a question mark tattoo over one eye. Gone is the image of the Riddler as a silly suit-wearing character; he now appears as a formidable threat. In just two issues, the Riddler has transformed from a scrawny nerd to a muscular action figure. I’m curious about his workout regimen and protein supplement brand.

What Does This New Look Mean For the Riddler?

Previously, The Riddler hasn’t posed a physical danger to Batman. Instead, he’s relied on clever strategies and intricate plans, many of which rhyme, to emerge victorious. However, it seems that he’s now prepared to engage in hand-to-hand combat with the top members of the Bat Family. This shift could potentially mark a significant change, as The Riddler might be incorporating more physical prowess along with his cunning intellect. If this is indeed the case, it couldn’t come at a more opportune moment.

Without a doubt, Hush poses an equally formidable threat during both strategy and combat. His recent transformation sparked a warning from the Riddler to Nightwing and Batgirl, suggesting they seek aid for their impending battle with Thomas Elliot. The Riddler hints that he may have insights into Hush’s mind, implying his strategic acumen is one asset. Moreover, this new appearance could indicate he’s prepared to engage in the physical conflict as well. He certainly seems ready for lethal action.

Should the Riddler acquire combat abilities as formidable as his intellect, he’d escalate from a significant threat to one of Batman’s deadliest adversaries ever, undeniably so. There wouldn’t be any room for debate about his position in Batman’s rogues’ gallery if he could withstand the Dark Knight in hand-to-hand combat. A Riddler who combines strength with wit might even defeat Batman in a manner unseen since Bane’s plot in “Knightfall.” If this transformation brings new abilities, then Gotham City is far from secure. Personally, I’m eager to witness the Riddler engage in combat. It sounds somewhat daring, but it could also be quite amusing if he turns up scrawny again in future tales. However, at present? This character is remarkably muscular, and it would be a shame not to see him utilize those muscles once.
