Ridge Racer Returns to PS5 This June!

Update [Thu 1st May 2025, 5am]: For nearly an entire month, it appeared that the Nintendo Switch 2 would be the exclusive platform for Arcade Archives 2 Ridge Racer, but now, industrious developer Hamster has revealed that the game will also be released on PS5.

The game is scheduled to debut on Sony’s console on the 5th of June, coinciding with the new Nintendo hybrid device. It will also be accessible on the PS4 platform. However, it might seem confusing because it belongs to the original Arcade Archives line on PS4, which means some of the features introduced for the PS5 version won’t be included in this release.

Alongside the Original Mode, High Score Mode, and Caravan Mode found within the Arcade Archives collection, the upcoming Arcade Archives 2 Ridge Racer will also introduce a fresh addition – Time Attack Mode.

In Time Attack Mode, the goal is to finish the game as swiftly as possible. The emphasis here lies on speed rather than the points or score you accumulate during the gameplay.

“Additionally, functionality has been significantly enhanced.

Instead of having only a single save point, there are now multiple options available. Additionally, players can take advantage of a “rewind” function which enables them to try again after a difficult part in the game, and a “quick start” option for those eager to begin playing immediately.

Additionally, support for Variable Refresh Rate (VRR) has been included, enhancing the ability to faithfully replicate the authentic arcade gaming feel.

The cost hasn’t been revealed just now, but we’re eagerly anticipating the opportunity to take control of one of the best arcade racers ever produced once more.

Original Story:

Hamster Corporation, a diligent Japanese arcade game developer, plans to introduce a fresh series from their Arcade Archives collection onto the Nintendo Switch 2. This launch commences with the iconic 1993 Namco title, Ridge Racer.

However, the renowned System 22 game won’t be available to play on PS5 at launch, since developers have only confirmed support for Nintendo’s latest console so far.

It’s clear that Ridge Racer and PlayStation have a strong connection since the initial game was quickly adapted for the PS1, demonstrating the prowess of Sony’s new system. Although the current version is an arcade adaptation, we hope to experience it on the PS5 in the future.

According to the press statement, the upcoming Arcade Archives series will incorporate Time Attack options and numerous enhancements such as multiple save points and Variable Refresh Rate (VRR) compatibility.

We’ll reach out to Hamster and investigate whether they have any intentions to release this game on the PlayStation Store.

For now, you have the opportunity to enjoy both the PSP version of Ridge Racer 2 and the PS1 classic Ridge Racer Type 4 on either your PS5 or PS4 systems. This is possible through the emulation feature offered by your PS Plus Premium subscription.
