Right to Repair gets another win! Microsoft furthers its partnership with iFixit as official Xbox parts are now available on iFixit’s store

What you need to know

  • As technology has become more complicated the ability for the layperson to repair their devices has become more complicated.
  • Some companies have purposefully made it difficult or impossible to repair their devices which has led to the Right to Repair movement.
  • Xbox has already offered repair parts on the Microsoft Store, but now iFixit is offering official Xbox replacement parts as well.
  • You can check out all the Xbox parts on iFixit’s Microsoft Repair Hub.

As someone who has spent countless hours tinkering with electronics over the years, I can wholeheartedly appreciate the strides Microsoft and iFixit are making towards promoting repairability. The availability of official Xbox replacement parts and repair guides is a game-changer for those of us who enjoy DIY repairs.

Back in December 2021, we shared news about Microsoft partnering with iFixit. Since then, Microsoft has been backing the Right to Repair movement by making additional Surface repair tools, components, and manuals accessible through iFixit’s website. If you’re curious about available parts for repairs, feel free to explore at iFixit’s Microsoft Repair Hub.

iFixit has more than just Xbox replacement parts

As a researcher delving into Xbox repairs, I must say that while it’s essential to note the frequently required components for replacement as listed on iFixit’s store, what truly stands out is the Xbox Toolkit.

I know from personal experience that it’s never worth trying to repair something without the proper tools. I have several laptops and electronics that have broken tabs or cracked plastic because I didn’t use the right tool for the job. If you plan to repair your Xbox make sure to pick up the Xbox Toolkit and have peace of mind you have the right tool.

Don’t skip out on iFixit’s world class repair guides

Among iFixit’s standout features that distinguish it from other companies is their extensive collection of repair manuals. Although our own guides at Windows Central are highly commendable, the repair manuals provided by iFixit also serve as valuable resources.

iFixit offers repair manuals spanning from the first Xbox model to the latest Xbox Series X Digital edition. These comprehensive, well-structured guides, which are among the top in their category, provide clear and straightforward steps for easy reference.

As the Xbox Series X might be the last physical Xbox, being able to repair mine is a huge benefit

From an analyst’s perspective: Given the rapid shift towards digital-only versions in the gaming market, exemplified by the latest iterations of Xbox, maintaining the longevity of my original Xbox Series X is crucial for me. I possess a substantial collection of Xbox 360, Xbox One, and Xbox Series physical games, and I’m uncertain about the direction Xbox will take in the future. However, I aspire to continue enjoying these physical games for as long as possible.

Supporting the Right to Repair by Microsoft and Xbox is a consumer-focused move that many larger companies have yet to adopt. In my opinion, it’s worth praising this initiative as it encourages the longevity of the Surface and Xbox product lines by making consumer repair an option.
