Riker & Troi: Star Trek’s Unmatched Finales Trio

In three different series finales, we find Commander William Riker (Jonathan Frakes) and Counselor Deanna Troi (Marina Sirtis), two beloved characters from Star Trek. They initially crossed paths on Star Trek: The Next Generation, where they served under Captain Jean-Luc Picard (Patrick Stewart) aboard the USS Enterprise-D. It was revealed in the series premiere that these Starfleet officers had a past romance, and their relationship evolved into one of Star Trek’s most iconic love stories. Over time, they got married, and Riker eventually took command of the USS Titan.

In the final episodes of various Star Trek series, Commander Riker and Counselor Troi made appearances. They were seen in the concluding episodes of Star Trek: The Next Generation and Star Trek: Enterprise, several years apart. Moreover, they reprised their roles in the finale of Star Trek: Picard during its third season. Interestingly, they almost appeared in another series finale, specifically that of Star Trek: Lower Decks; however, the final episode did not show the crew of the Titan.

Riker & Troi Appeared In Star Trek: The Next Generation’s Series Finale

Riker & Troi Both Played A Major Role In TNG Season 7, Episodes 25 & 26, “All Good Things…”

In the final episode of “Star Trek: The Next Generation,” it’s no shock that key characters like Commander Riker and Counselor Troi played crucial parts. The storyline in “All Good Things…” unfolds with Captain Jean-Luc Picard traversing three distinct timelines to unravel the enigma surrounding an unusual anomaly. The finale ties up the TNG narrative neatly as Q (John de Lancie) reappears to orchestrate a test for humanity’s progress. In the current timeline, Counselor Troi, who is in a relationship with Lt. Worf at that moment, is among the initial individuals Picard confides about his adventure.

In the alternative future scenario, it’s Riker who ascends to the position of Admiral and commands the Starship Enterprise, while Counselor Troi assists Picard in various capacities across past, present, and future timelines. Interestingly, Riker has a more substantial role in both the present and future, but only makes a brief appearance in the past. Both characters are by Picard’s side during the climactic scenes of “All Good Things…

Riker & Troi Appeared In Star Trek: Enterprise’s Series Finale

Riker & Troi Returned To Star Trek For Enterprise Season 4, Episode 22, “These Are The Voyages…”

In an unexpected turn of events, Commander Riker and Counselor Troi suddenly showed up in the controversial final episode of Star Trek: Enterprise. This particular episode unfolds within the context of TNG’s “The Pegasus,” where Riker ponders whether to disclose all to Picard. At Troi’s urging, Riker steps into the holodeck and reenacts the final voyage of the Enterprise NX-01. These incidents transpired approximately six years following the last episode of Enterprise, serving as a direct prelude to the establishment of the United Federation of Planets.

Inside the holodeck scenario, Riker assumes the position of the ship’s cook, which gives him an opportunity to converse freely with various Enterprise crew members about their past events. During this simulation, Riker encounters the demise of Commander Trip Tucker (Connor Trinneer), who bravely gives up his life to save Captain Jonathan Archer (Scott Bakula). Later, Riker and Tori bear witness to Archer’s groundbreaking speech at the Federation Charter signing ceremony. This event influences Riker’s choice concerning the Pegasus.

Riker & Troi Appeared In Star Trek: Picard’s Series Finale

Riker & Troi Reunited With Their TNG Crew In Picard Season 3, Episode 10, “The Last Generation”

In the third season of Picard, we caught up with former crew members Riker and Troi at their home on Nepenthe. However, they played crucial roles in a much larger capacity later on. Admiral Picard enlisted Riker’s aid to seize control of the USS Titan-A for a vital mission: rescuing Dr. Beverly Crusher (Gates McFadden). Troi joined the fray towards the end of the season, but both Riker and Troi were pivotal in the struggle against the combined Borg/Changeling threat to Starfleet. As a captain now, Riker skillfully commanded the Titan and subsequently accompanied Picard and Worf to the Borg cube to save Jack Crusher (Ed Speleers).

Through her empathic bond with him, Counselor Troi was able to pinpoint Commander Riker within the intricate Borg cube, ultimately leading to the safe escape of all original cast members from “Star Trek: The Next Generation.” In the sequel series, “Star Trek: Picard,” Riker and Troi parted ways contentedly, planning a vacation with their daughter Kestra (Lulu Wilson). A year after this, Captain Picard and his companions gathered for another round of poker, providing the crew of the Enterprise-D one last fitting farewell. The finale “The Last Generation” highlighted Will Riker and Deanna Troi as the only two “Star Trek” characters who graced three different finales.
