As a longtime devotee of J.R.R. Tolkien’s Middle-earth saga, having traversed through the Shire, Mordor, and countless other realms in my imagination, I must say that the second season of The Rings of Power has me thoroughly enthralled.
With the arrival of its second season, The Rings of Power finds Middle-earth in turmoil following the revelation that Halbrand, initially thought to be a missing prince from the Southlands, is none other than the sinister figure of Sauron.
However, one significant character remains unidentified: this enigmatic figure known as The Stranger.
To start off, a character appeared without any recollection of who he was or what he was doing there. He formed bonds with the Harfoots and uncovered his true identity as an Istar, which translates to “one who is wise” or “magician”.
There was an uproar on social media with fans speculating wildly about the real persona behind The Stranger, with many believing it could be none other than Gandalf the Gray based on various hints.
According to Payne, this character’s storyline during this season revolves around self-exploration. He has discovered that he possesses magical abilities but is still struggling to master them. Furthermore, he remains uncertain about how to employ his powers effectively and who, if anyone, he should confront.
In essence, you’re embarking on a shared adventure with him. The identity of ‘him’ is indeed a crucial detail, but it’s just one topping – the cherry – on the larger sundae. However, the answer to that question will be revealed this season.
Daniel Weyman portrays The Stranger, expressing gratitude for the fascination and speculation about his role that has emerged among viewers.
Daniel remarked, “It’s fascinating to see how those who’ve watched the show and are familiar with Tolkien have drawn upon their personal connections to create insightful interpretations as to why The Stranger could be that particular character.”
1. “It’s truly humbling to listen to those who cherish this tale so deeply and possess such insight into it. I consider myself merely a caretaker, preserving the narrative of this grand saga.”
In spite of this, I maintained that The Stranger’s real identity is not essential for grasping his character as “the viewers are already quite familiar with him, regardless of what name he eventually goes by.”
Regardless of who The Stranger turns out to be, his upcoming season promises excitement since he’ll be embarking on a trek with the Harfoots named Nori across the challenging desert landscape of Rhûn.
The duo embarks on an enlightening adventure at the outset of the season, eager to uncover insights about their reason for being.
“Swiftly, situations begin to deteriorate,” Weyman explained. “Either it’s the environment posing challenges – lack of food, water, and extreme temperatures. Or it’s the encroaching night that is enveloping Middle-earth. All of a sudden, they reach a point where they must tackle problems that are beyond The Stranger’s capabilities.”
“The Stranger must figure out which route to take amidst all his options, deciding on the path he should tread.”
