Rivals finale delivers shock potential death scene for major character

As a seasoned movie critic with over three decades of experience, I must say that Rivals has certainly proven itself to be a masterful tale of power, deceit, and unforeseen twists. The finale episode was nothing short of a rollercoaster ride, leaving me on the edge of my seat until the very last frame.

*Warning: This article contains full spoilers for Rivals episode 8.*

Throughout the course of its eight episodes, it was clear that Rivals excelled at providing unexpected plot turns and a wealth of drama. However, nothing could have fully prepared us for the manner in which the final episode unfolded – nor for the main character who found themselves battling for survival in the series’ concluding moments.

In the climactic final act, I found myself drawn into the tense standoff between Corinium and Venturer, where the high stakes were palpable. Yet, rather than the expected all-out conflict, the narrative shifted towards a pivotal public gathering – a power struggle for the Central South-West TV franchise.

Just as the gladiators in the Colosseum awaited their turn, I found myself on the edge of my seat, eagerly anticipating the independent TV debate between Corinium and Venturer. Each side was poised and ready to deliver a performance, promising thrilling visions for the future that had me yearning for the curtain to rise.

In a heartfelt address, Declan O’Hara (Aidan Turner) directed remarks towards Tony Baddingham (David Tennant). This passionate speech resonated strongly with the audience, pushing Tony’s anger to an even higher degree.

Despite the decision being postponed, he remained steadfast in his belief that the young and ambitious Venturer had committed an extraordinary act by overthrowing Corinium.

Initially on edge about potential betrayal from his colleagues at Venturer, Tony grows increasingly agitated and begins to lash out at his team, insinuating that they had overlooked crucial details which could have strengthened their efforts to discredit Venturer.

But what does he mean?

As Cameron Cook (Nafessa Williams) steps into a private space with Rupert (Alex Hassell), she’s pondering over her suspicion that Tony might be hiding something. However, Rupert assures her, alleviating her concerns, that he will stand by her, no matter what the outcome, even if Venturer doesn’t secure the contract.

Meanwhile, Tony’s situation continues to deteriorate as he broods over the day’s occurrences in his office. Suddenly, his wife, Lady Monica (played by Claire Rushbrook), pays him a visit.

Despite not directly stating that she’s aware of his affair with Cameron, she hints at it through her comments about her strong loyalty towards her husband and her remark that “patience has its limits.” She advises Tony to tread carefully and instructs him to return home that night so they can have a talk. If he doesn’t, she threatens to take the children and depart.

However, as the evening progressed, matters worsened. After departing from the Corinium offices, Cameron encountered an unexpected obstacle: Tony, who was standing and barring her path. He summoned her into his office, where he accused her of having an affair with Rupert, demanding to know for how long it had been going on.

As Cameron pretends it’s just about gathering data from the other party, Tony suspects there’s more to it. What further agitates Tony immensely is the knowledge that Cameron is involved romantically with Tony’s adversary.

Displeased, Tony reluctantly agrees to fulfill Cameron’s wishes and proposes to enlist his lawyer to draft the divorce papers with Monica, aiming to unite him and Cameron.

He’ll only do that, though, if Cameron vows to never let Rupert touch her again – something Cameron can’t and won’t agree to. Threatening to sack her (and jeopardising her working visa), Cameron seems unfazed by Tony’s threats and says she’ll resign, explaining that she’ll marry Rupert to remain in the UK if she has to.

In response to what she said, Tony strikes Cameron, prompting Cameron to retaliate physically. With both of them getting into a physical altercation, Cameron, in search of something to defend herself, grabs her nearby Spanish TV award and whacks Tony with it, hitting him on the head and causing him to lose balance.

Stunned by her actions, Cameron stands facing Tony, who seems to be taking his final, trembling breaths before his eyes close, and the words of his previous speech echo strangely from the television screens behind them.

Could this spell the end for Tennant’s Tony Baddingham, then?

Although Tony appeared to have fainted due to his severe head injury, it’s plausible that Cameron might seek help or, given Tony’s enigmatic nature as a villain, he could feign unconsciousness and use the attempt on his life as a means of control over Cameron.
