Rob Brydon was “moved to tears” by “emotional” final Gavin and Stacey episode

As someone who has grown up with Gavin and Stacey as part of my family’s holiday traditions, I can hardly contain my excitement for this Christmas Day special! Rob Brydon’s emotional response to the script confirms what we’ve all been secretly hoping – that our favorite characters will return one last time to bring a smile to our faces and maybe even shed a tear or two.

As a film enthusiast myself, I can’t help but feel deeply touched when I read the script for the last episode of Gavin and Stacey, scheduled to premiere on BBC One this Christmas Day.

Speaking recently on Chris Evans’ Breakfast Show, directly from Laverstoke Park Farm (August 23rd), I, Brydon (Uncle Bryn throughout the series), shared my thoughts.

He shared that it had been approximately a month since they last saw the script. This was during our recent vacation, as we were out of town at that time.

He said he had read it, then went on to say it was excellent. Later, when Evans teased him about possibly just saying that due to excess enthusiasm, he responded by calling it “outstanding.”

“Do you know what? I was moved to tears, because it’s emotional,” he continued.

As a dedicated cinephile, I’ve been buzzing with speculation about the potential return of our beloved show since whispers of its revival started circulating. It wasn’t until May this year that those rumors were finally validated, much to the delight of fans like myself. However, at different stages, some cast members – including Mathew Horne – had hinted at doubts about its comeback.

But it turns out the cast had always known this was the plan, according to Brydon.

“He confessed that even though we expected it, we were instructed to keep it confidential. Therefore, we found ourselves in a situation where we had to deceive others.”

“It’s a horrible feeling, because you don’t want to lie to somebody right in the face.”

Absolutely, Brydon joins a group of recognizable actors who will once again take on their roles from the cherished sitcom. Alongside him are Horne, Joanna Page, James Corden, Ruth Jones, Alison Steadman, and Larry Lamb, who are all set to return as well.

As a die-hard film enthusiast, I’ve heard whispers that the talented Sheridan Smith might reprise her role as my beloved character Corden’s younger sister, Rudi, for the very first time since 2010. However, we haven’t received any official confirmation on this exciting rumor just yet.

In July, Corden officially announced that the screenplay for the holiday special had been finished, expressing a strong emotional sentiment as he prepares to say goodbye to the popular sitcom. Filming is tentatively scheduled for September or October.

Absolutely, the highly anticipated episode concludes with an intriguing cliffhanger. Following the blockbuster 2019 Christmas special where Nessa (Jones) unexpectedly proposed to Smithy (Corden) in a shocking turn of events, this latest installment leaves us hanging on edge for the resolution.

In due time, fans can expect to uncover his reply during a farewell special concluding the series, where Corden underscores that the show will not return again after this point.

Gavin & Stacey returns to BBC One and iPlayer on Christmas Day.
