Rob Liefeld Returning to Youngblood After Nearly a Decade Away

As a gamer with over three decades of comic book history under my belt, I can hardly contain my excitement at the return of one of the most iconic teams in the industry – Youngblood! Rob Liefeld, the mastermind behind Deadpool and so many more, is revisiting his beloved creation, and it’s like welcoming an old friend back home.

After four decades as one of the top-selling comic book artists, renowned for characters like Deadpool, Rob Liefeld is returning to one of his earliest and most cherished creations: Youngblood. First introduced in the ’80s and then launched with Image Comics in 1992, this series follows a government-backed superhero team as they face villains, internal conflicts, and political hurdles that could jeopardize their mission to save the world. Liefeld parted ways with Youngblood due to a disagreement with Rip Media, Inc., who manages the rights for the franchise.

Apart from the upcoming series, Image Comics plans to release the “Youngblood Vault Edition,” which showcases high-definition scans of the original artwork from the 1992 “Youngblood” series. This special edition will be a luxurious, oversized hardcover book. Additionally, they’ll publish a replica of “Youngblood #1,” with its release scheduled for April – the same month as the launch of the original book in 1992. As for future Vault Editions, there’s no information yet on whether their success could lead to more.

I’m thrilled to be surrounded by characters I brought to life, which sparked a significant movement,” Liefeld shared with THR. “They hold such rich history. Youngblood is incredibly dear to me. These characters embody my deepest passions.

2018 marked the first collaboration between Rob Liefeld and Scott Mitchell Rosenberg, a business partner from Liefeld’s former company, Awesome Comics. After the disbandment of Awesome Comics in 2000, Liefeld divided the company’s properties among himself, John Hyde, and Rosenberg, each gaining rights to eight unique franchises for exploitation in various media. Liefeld retained publishing rights over his own character creations. However, a twist unfolded when Rosenberg announced in 2018 that he had partnered with Andrew Rev to fund Youngblood comics and toys. It has been revealed that Rev only licensed the property, not owned it, enabling Liefeld to revisit this franchise once more.

Rob Liefeld is set to create and illustrate a new series under Image Comics. He previously announced his departure from Deadpool, expressing his intention to focus on characters he owns in the latter part of his career. It seems that the allure of revisiting Youngblood proved too strong as circumstances have shifted.

According to Rosenberg, he and Rob make a fantastic team, and his enthusiasm for the relaunch of “Youngblood” is just as strong now as it was back in 1992 when it first came out. He’s thrilled to share this with both old and new audiences, working alongside its original creator, Rob Liefeld.
