It’s not every day that a father and son get to share the limelight and create art together. However, it seems that their collaboration has come with its own set of challenges.
When every day is take your kid to work day, life can get a little hectic.
Rob Lowe’s son, John Owen Lowe, who is 28 years old, has shared stories about the initial filming experience of their comedy show “Unstable.” According to him, it wasn’t an easy beginning for him on the set.
About two weeks into shooting the initial season, John Owen shared with Andy Cohen on his radio program “Andy Cohen Live” (July 25 episode), that he experienced a small mental breakdown.
As I stepped off the set and made my way to my trailer, I couldn’t help but let out a frustrated sigh. I had been working hard to establish my own identity and create some distance from him. But now, I was going to be sharing the spotlight as his co-star. The realization hit me like a ton of bricks. My face would be next to his on promotional materials, and we’d be doing interviews together. It felt like all these facts had suddenly come crashing down on me.
John Owen, the younger son of Rob and Sheryl Berkoff, shared that with the assistance of his representatives, he gained a more balanced view on the matter.
He remarked, “To put it simply, my father’s time with us is limited. It’s a wonderful experience that we get to enjoy this journey together. Working in show business can be quite challenging.”
John Owen didn’t just collaborate with Rob on “Unstable” for the first time; they had previously worked together. In the year 2020, John joined the writing team for Rob’s other show, “9-1-1: Lone Star,” during its inaugural season.
John Owen described his career progression, starting as a lowly staff writer and climbing the ladder to become a story editor. Along the way, he put in countless hours and gained valuable experience. However, he grew increasingly frustrated as he found himself writing extensive content for someone else, leading him to feel overwhelmed and on the brink of exhaustion.
John Owen didn’t just team up with Rob for the first time on “Unstable” at age 60. In fact, they had previously collaborated when John became a part of the writing team for Rob’s other show, “9-1-1: Lone Star,” during its inaugural season in 2020.
John Owen shared his experience, “Initially, I joined as a junior writer. With dedication and effort, I progressed to the role of story editor. Along the way, I gained valuable knowledge. However, the monotony of constantly writing for someone else became overwhelming and drove me to the brink of insanity.”
The outcome of that encounter left John Owen feeling unusually anxious and uncertain, which he described as a “panic attack,” while penning scripts for “9-1-1: Lone Star” for his father.
He explained that one motivation behind producing the show was his growing frustration working closely with that person. They believed this amusing anecdote would make for good entertainment.
Unstable will return for season two on Netflix August 1.
