Robert Downey Jr., renowned for his role adaptability, has had ample chances to shape up due to his work in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Right now, he’s deep into filming Avengers: Doomsday, and it appears that training comes naturally to him. Yet, in the past, the Hollywood star admitted to struggling with getting the knack of training, sometimes even pushing himself too hard. This was evident when he talked about the challenges of maintaining a superhero-like physique.
Actor Robert Downey Jr., known for portraying Tony Stark over many years, is not hesitant about tackling the intricate parts of playing a significant character in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. In terms of fitness, he clarified his routine to Men’s Fitness (as reported by Comic Book Movie) during an extensive conversation. At that point, Downey Jr. had appeared in just a few Marvel films, but he was already aware of the physical preparation required:
It seems I had a dream about becoming an action hero. I yearned to appear confident and protect myself, among other things. That genre has always appealed to me, but honestly, it’s quite unrealistic. I’m not particularly tall, strong, fast, or assertive. However, I’m not pretending; it’s just a bit of cosmic humor to me.
According to Men’s Fitness, Robert Downey Jr.’s workout routine demanded approximately 12 hours of gym time per week, showcasing his unwavering commitment. (Emphasizing his dedication.) In contrast to some of his fellow cast members, Downey didn’t necessarily need to be as muscular as Chris Evans or Chris Hemsworth. However, given that his character donned an iron suit, he still had to embody the physique of an “action hero.” His impressive physical appearance in the films is evidence of his efforts. Yet, his remarks suggest that the intense fitness regimen might have posed a challenge for him.
The scenario was perfect, but it turns out to be utterly impractical in the long run. Frankly, considering that I’m neither a child nor an elite athlete, my actions likely involve experiencing exceptional wellbeing consistently while potentially pushing myself beyond safe limits.
It felt great, but it won’t last and might lead to overtraining.
More on Robert Downey

Robert Downey Jr., along with some members of the Avengers: Endgame cast, recently embarked on a visit to observe the Thunderbolts ensemble. I can hardly contain my excitement for all the upcoming character interactions!
*Thunderbolts is a Marvel Comics team that has appeared in various adaptations of Marvel properties including films and comics. The team is known for its shifting roster consisting of both villains and heroes who have been rehabilitated or reformed, as well as characters posing as the Thunderbolts while secretly pursuing their own agenda.
As a fan, I recall that Robert Downey Jr. was well past 40 when he first donned the Iron Man suit, and I can appreciate why there might have been an initial learning curve for him. Yet, looking back, everything seems to have fallen into place quite nicely, given his impressive physical performances throughout the years. Regarding his training regimen for Doctor Doom in Avengers: Doomsday, the specifics are uncertain. However, rumors circulate that Downey is putting in some serious effort behind the scenes, focusing on character development to bring this iconic role to life.
Meanwhile, some of the actors portraying Victor von Doom have been gearing up for the upcoming Avengers sequel by getting in shape. Chris Hemsworth appears to be focusing on bulking up his biceps, as shown in a video he posted online, and Simu Liu’s abs are looking toned too. Although I don’t think any of these leading men or seasoned MCU actors require much workout advice, I imagine that Robert Downey Jr., with his past struggles, would offer helpful tips if asked.
