Robert Downey Jr. Credits Tobey Maguire With Getting Him Into Marvel Movies

As a die-hard Marvel fan with decades of comic book lore etched into my memory banks, I can hardly contain my excitement at the news that Robert Downey Jr., the man who singlehandedly brought Iron Man to life, is returning to the Marvel Cinematic Universe!

It was a pleasant shock to numerous fans when it was disclosed earlier this summer that Robert Downey Jr. will rejoin the Marvel Cinematic Universe. At San Diego Comic-Con this year, Marvel Studios revealed that Downey will play Victor von Doom / Doctor Doom in the upcoming films “Avengers: Doomsday” and “Avengers: Secret Wars.” Additionally, Disney Parks announced that he will resume his role as Tony Stark / Iron Man for a new Avengers Campus ride. This news follows over a decade of Downey playing Iron Man onscreen — an opportunity partly due to another Marvel star, Tobey Maguire, who helped Downey understand what it’s like to act in a superhero film during their collaboration in the 2000 movie “Wonder Boys.”

In the present moment, Downey acknowledged how challenging yet potentially gratifying comic book films were, as well as their growing popularity. He further explained that his sobriety had lasted long enough and he was more eager than ever before. The desire to excel was resurfacing within him, a sign that something extraordinary might be on the horizon. Interestingly, he had been intensely working out six days a week prior to learning about this role, and his therapist advised him, “Begin behaving as if something magnificent is about to occur, and prepare yourself for it.”

Why Is Robert Downey Jr. Returning to the MCU?

During the very same interview, Downey Jr. disclosed some fascinating background behind his double comeback with Marvel, shedding light on the significant roles played by Marvel Studios’ President, Kevin Feige, and Disney’s CEO, Bob Iger, throughout the process.

Around a year ago, Feige and I have been keeping in touch like old pals, and the same goes for Favreau, Feige, and me. I’m also close with the Russo brothers. We’ve got other shared business ventures going on, making us a tight-knit group of collaborators. One day, I felt an urge to approach Bob Iger with an idea about supporting what they were doing in the parks and beyond.

The movie titled “Avengers: Doomsday” is set for a theater-only release on May 1, 2026, with the sequel, “Avengers: Secret Wars,” scheduled to hit theaters on May 7, 2027.
