Robert Downey Jr.'s Marvel Co-Star Gwyneth Paltrow Reacts to Doctor Doom Casting: "I Don't Get It"

As a longtime Marvel fan and avid gamer, I have to admit that Robert Downey Jr.’s sudden return as Doctor Doom in the upcoming “Avengers: Doomsday” and “Avengers: Secret Wars” came as a complete surprise. I’ve been following the MCU since its inception, and I’ve watched Downey’s Tony Stark evolve from a self-centered billionaire to a hero who sacrificed himself in “Endgame.” It was a bittersweet moment that marked the end of an era for me.

If you’re perplexed by Robert Downey Jr.’s unexpected comeback to the Marvel Cinematic Universe, you’re not alone in your confusion. At the star-studded San Diego Comic-Con event from Hall H on Saturday, Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige made an astonishing announcement: The Russo Brothers are once again at the helm, directing Downey in “Avengers: Doomsday” and “Avengers: Secret Wars”. In an even more surprising turn of events, rather than reprising his iconic role as Tony Stark who valiantly perished in 2019’s “Endgame”, Downey is instead portraying the malevolent Victor von Doom, assuming the villainous persona of Doctor Doom within the MCU.

“I’m confused, have you become a villain?” was a possible way to paraphrase Gwyneth Paltrow’s Instagram comment after Downey revealed his Doctor Doom role at Comic-Con.

In the thrilling world of Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), I’ve had the pleasure of witnessing Downey and Paltrow shine together in a total of seven movies between 2008 and 2019. They brought the iconic duo of Tony Stark/Iron Man and Pepper Potts to life, gracing our screens in the Iron Man trilogy, The Avengers from 2012, and Spider-Man: Homecoming in 2017. However, during a live Instagram Q&A session in 2023, the actress herself seemed to dismiss any possibility of her return to this epic saga. She explained to her fans, “We simply stopped doing it because Iron Man met his end, and why would you need Pepper Potts without Iron Man? I’m not sure.”

I’ve always found Doctor Doom to be one of the most intricately crafted characters in comic books. His complexity sets him apart from many others, making him a potential frontrunner for the title of most engaging character in all of fiction. (Joe Russo’s words)

Russo hinted with a smile, “I believe an exceptional actor is essential to bring that character to life. Allow me to introduce the person who can embody Victor von Doom, proving the Marvel multiverse’s limitless potential.” Taking the stage, Downey quipped, “A fresh mask for the same challenge. I enjoy tackling complex roles.”

Just as Robert mentioned, “a new mask for the job, but the task remains the same,” Anthony Russo emphasized. Our common goal is to collaborate and deliver an exceptional movie experience for everyone here, and in two years, we’ll be sharing that with you through the film “Doomsday.” So let’s put our creativity, affection, and enthusiasm into it.

Initially titled “Avengers: The Kang Dynasty” in 2022, Marvel Studios changed direction following the criminal charges against actor Jonathan Majors in a 2023 domestic violence case. The role of multiversal antagonist Kang the Conqueror was subsequently recast.

Marvel Studios made some changes in the fifth Avengers film, replacing Major characters with Doctor Doom from the MCU. This shift aligns with the Doctor Doom central role in “Secret Wars,” a popular Marvel Comics storyline penned by Jonathan Hickman. Stephen McFeely, who previously co-wrote Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame, will pen both Avengers: Doomsday (release date: May 2026) and Avengers: Secret Wars (release date: May 2027).
