Robert Downey Jr’s One Condition for Marvel Return Reportedly Revealed

As a longtime Marvel fan who has followed Robert Downey Jr.’s career since his early days as Tony Stark/Iron Man, I can’t help but feel a sense of excitement and nostalgia at the news of his return to the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). After all, it was Downey’s portrayal of Iron Man that truly kickstarted the MCU and set the stage for the interconnected universe we know today.

Robert Downey Jr. is making a comeback in the Marvel Cinematic Universe after his character, Tony Stark / Iron Man, made the ultimate sacrifice in Avengers: Endgame. Many believed that Downey’s time with the franchise had come to an end. However, five years later, Downey is set to rejoin the series but this time, he will be donning the suit as Victor Von Doom instead of Tony Stark. Recent reports suggest that the return of some familiar directors was enough to persuade Downey to come back to the Marvel universe.

According to an insider who spoke to Variety, Downey agreed to come back for “Avengers: Doomsday” and “Avengers: Secret Wars” under the condition that Joe and Anthony Russo were in charge of directing both films. He reportedly preferred working with them above all others.

Downey is in line for the largest compensation of his career, according to reports, with an estimated earnings of over $80 million for rejoining the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The actor famously portraying Iron Man has made some extravagant demands, including personal jet travel, a dedicated security team, and a full-fledged camp on set for the upcoming Avengers productions.

When did RDJ decide to return to Marvel?

Downey showed signs of considering a comeback to the Marvel Cinamic Universe as early as June, after being away for several years.

1. “This role feels incredibly natural for me, almost as if it’s a part of my genetic makeup. It’s the most authentic character I’ve portrayed yet, despite being more dashing than I am. A month ago, in an interview with Variety, I admitted to being surprisingly receptive to the idea. It’s quite astonishing because we have a striking resemblance on screen. I even double-checked the photos we took together, making sure: ‘We still look decent, right?’ And I was reassured – ‘Yes, we do look good.'”

I’ve had the chance to chat with Downey in a different sit-down, and he shared his unwavering confidence in Marvel Studios head honcho, Kevin Feige. “I always tell you this,” he said with a nod, “never, ever place a wager against Kevin Feige. It’s an unwinnable bet. He holds all the cards. He’ll come out on top every time.”

Marvel Studios has announced the following release dates for their upcoming films: “Captain America: Brave New World” on February 14, 2025; “Thunderbolts” in May 2025; “The Fantastic Four: First Steps” in July 2025; “Blade” in November 2025; “Avengers: Doomsday” in May 2026; and “Avengers: Secret Wars” in May 2027.
