RoboCop TV Series Moving Forward at Prime Video With Horror Master Producing

As a longtime fan of the gritty and action-packed world of RoboCop, I couldn’t help but feel a surge of excitement when I heard about James Wan’s involvement with Amazon’s upcoming series! Wan’s knack for creating edge-of-your-seat horror masterpieces like Saw, Insidious, and the Conjuring Universe is truly unparalleled. His touch will undoubtedly breathe new life into this iconic franchise.

Amazon has enlisted horror expert James Wan as an executive producer for their upcoming streaming series based on the RoboCop franchise. The RoboCop series has previously undergone multiple reboot attempts, with the latest being Neill Blomkamp’s RoboCop Returns. Despite not taking flight, there seems to be progress in the development of the RoboCop series on Amazon Prime Video. As per Variety, the showrunner for this new version of RoboCop is Peter Ocko (Moonhaven), and James Wan will serve as executive producer under his Atomic Monster production company. Known for crafting films like Saw, Insidious, and the Conjuring Universe, as well as contributing to DC Universe’s Aquaman and Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom, Wan is a familiar name in horror and comic book circles.

Back in 2022 when Amazon snatched up MGM, I was among the many exciting properties they had their eyes on for future development. As it turned out, “RoboCop,” “Stargate,” “Legally Blonde,” “Fame,” “Barbershop,” “The Magnificent Seven,” “Pink Panther,” and “The Thomas Crown Affair” were all in the running to be brought back to life on screen.

Neill Blomkamp teases details of abandoned RoboCop project

2018 saw Neill Blomkamp being assigned to create a new “RoboCop” film, initially titled “RoboCop Returns”. However, by the following year, Blomkamp shared that he was no longer associated with this project.

Neill Blomkamp shared with JoBlo back in August 2023 that “This is the only film I’ve ever made where I aimed to emulate Paul Verhoeven’s directorial style.” He wanted the movie to give off a vibe of happening just one day after the previous events, as if Dick Jones had fallen out of the window on Monday and this was Tuesday. Essentially, it started the very next morning, making it a direct sequel in the same style.

1987’s groundbreaking film centered around police officer Alex Murphy (Peter Weller), who was critically injured in a future Detroit, only to be reborn as the relentless cyborg RoboCop by a corporation. This movie sparked sequels, a TV series, and an animated spinoff. In 2014, Joel Kinnaman took on the role in a modern adaptation of the story, but its PG-13 rating led to a more subdued portrayal compared to the original.
