The developer responsible for the Batman: Arkham game series, as well as the upcoming title Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League, Rocksteady Studios, has reportedly undergone a new wave of job cuts. As per Eurogamer’s report, these layoffs took place prior to 2024 and affected programmers, artists, some quality assurance team members.
As of now, there’s been no statement from the overarching Warner Bros. Games corporation regarding the job cuts impacting Rocksteady Studios.
In September 2024, the studio was forced to let go a significant number of employees from its Quality Assurance (QA) team. This reduction in workforce at Rocksteady was quite substantial. These layoffs might have been prompted by the underwhelming response and sales of their latest game, Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League.
In our assessment, the game was severely criticized for its average quality, which was unfortunate given Rocksteady’s history of producing highly-rated single-player games. A significant point of contention about Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League is that it is exclusively a multiplayer live-service title with monotonous gameplay.
After the launch of the game, Warner Bros. Games disclosed that its sales hadn’t met their anticipated targets, leading to a significant 41% decrease in earnings.
Despite whispers of an upcoming Batman game from Rocksteady, there have still been layoffs within the company. Although it’s speculated that this new project will fall under the Arkham series, neither Rocksteady nor WB Games have officially announced the title yet.
It’s been suggested that the creation of this game may have been influenced by the team wanting to return to their original focus on crafting single-player games, instead of working on multiplayer live-service titles such as “Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League”.
