The newly presented portable gaming systems, Asus ROG Xbox Allies and ROG Xbox Allies X, are undeniably powerful in terms of hardware. However, their use of an LCD screen instead of a high-end OLED display is worth mentioning. In a recent video (as reported by WCCFTech), Asus’ gaming marketing content senior manager, Whitson Gordon, clarified that this choice was primarily due to power consumption concerns.
In the flowing waterway, Gordon pointed out that although Asus often prefers utilizing OLED screens, particularly in its collection of high-end PC monitors, they opted to employ LCD displays for their handheld devices. This decision was made because essential features like Variable Refresh Rate (VRR) couldn’t be implemented without compromising battery life.
Gordon stated, “We’ve been experimenting with Organic Light-Emitting Diodes (OLED) for research and development, as well as creating prototypes. However, when you take Variable Refresh Rate (VRR) into account, we’re not fully satisfied yet. I want to make it clear that, in my viewpoint, a display without VRR is not suitable for gaming in 2025. In other words, VRR is an essential feature, and at the moment, OLED with VRR consumes more power and costs more than the LCD we’re currently using on the Ally.
Gordon mentioned that because OLED displays are high-end and expensive to produce, they result in a higher cost for manufacturing. Consequently, when these products reach stores, they carry a premium price. However, since the ROG Xbox Ally and ROG Xbox Ally X may not become the main gaming platform for many consumers, it’s crucial that their prices remain affordable.
Gordon stated that analyzing current sales trends in the handheld market, both for our devices and those of competitors, indicates a clear price range that consumers are willing to pay for such a device. This is because many people view it as a secondary device rather than their main one. In feedback received, there’s a consistent request for affordability – people don’t want to overspend on this item. That sentiment aligns with ours, which is why we’re striving to keep costs low by excluding unnecessary features that most users wouldn’t use. Our goal is to find a reasonable price point for these devices.
I won’t discuss pricing further. You should adjust your perceptions based on current market trends and our unique offerings. To include 32GB memory, OLED screen, Z2 Extreme features, and additional premium elements, the price would exceed what you typically find in the Ally lineup. Most users are not prepared to pay that high a price for these extras.
In terms of the software aspect, Phil Spencer, head of Microsoft Gaming, mentioned that the version of Windows designed for gaming on these handheld devices is a product of the closest partnership he’s ever witnessed between Microsoft’s gaming and Windows teams over his 30-year tenure at the company.
