As a cinephile with over three decades of immersion in the magical realm of Star Wars, I must say that the prospect of Felicity Jones reprising her role as Jyn Erso in the upcoming season 2 of Andor is nothing short of exhilarating! The potential for a deeper exploration of Jyn’s character and backstory within this prequel series could add layers of complexity and richness to the already captivating narrative.
In Gareth Edwards’ 2016 production, “Rogue One: A Star Wars Story“, fresh characters were introduced to the Lucasfilm universe, some of which haven’t been seen in the prequel series “Andor“. Set a week before the occurrences depicted in “Star Wars: A New Hope“, Felicity Jones portrays Jyn Erso, a Rebel soldier who allies with Diego Luna’s Cassian Andor to unearth the Empire’s concealed Death Star blueprints. Jones has hinted at the prospect of returning to her character. “There’s still some loose ends there,” she shared with “Variety” during interviews for her latest film, “The Brutalist“. “If you present Jyn in the right narrative, then why not?
Four years ago, I was expressing a similar longing to return to Star Wars. I’ve been maintaining that reincarnation could indeed be a reality in the Star Wars universe. In fact, I hinted at this during an interview with The Hollywood Reporter last October, suggesting my character Jyn might not have met her end in Rogue One as it seemed. I strongly believe there’s unfinished business for Jyn Erso; I feel she has more tales to tell in the Star Wars saga.
In a twist that’s become typical for the Star Wars universe, Emperor Palpatine was revived in 2019’s “Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker.” However, it seems more likely that Jyn Erso might make an appearance in “Andor,” considering the series takes place during her lifetime. The second season of “Andor” is expected to welcome back characters like Cassian, Syril, Bix, Luthen, and others. As for new faces joining the cast, no official announcements have been made yet.
It’s possible that Jones might still appear in Andor season 2, even though it hasn’t been officially confirmed yet. The first season ended with the rebellion against the Imperials on Ferrix. Although Cassian doesn’t meet Jyn until much later in Rogue One, there could be a minor subplot in the final season of Andor that explores Jones’ character during those earlier days.
In 2022, the series “Andor,” with Luna playing Cassian, debuted on Disney+. The second season is slated for release in April 2025. New characters like Adria Arjona’s Bix Caleen, Andy Serkis’ Kino Loy, Faye Marsay’s Vel Sartha, and Stellan Skarsgard’s Luthen Rael have been introduced in the series, along with Kyle Soller’s Syril Karn and Denise Gough’s Dedra Meero. Some familiar faces from “Rogue One” that have returned in “Andor” include Luna’s Cassian, Genevieve O’Reilly’s Mon Mothma, Forest Whitaker’s Saw Gerrera, and Duncan Pow’s Melshi. Given these recurring characters, there’s a chance that season 2 could bring back Jyn Erso from “Rogue One.
