As a long-time fan who’s ridden countless virtual roller coasters since the original game graced our screens back in 1999, the announcement of RollerCoaster Tycoon Classic coming to Nintendo Switch is a dream come true! I’ve built parks on PC, iOS, and Android, but nothing beats the portability and convenience of playing on a handheld console.
On December 5, it has been announced that Atari plans to launch a Nintendo Switch version of RollerCoaster Tycoon Classic.
The classic game, RollerCoaster Tycoon, has been released on various platforms before, including Steam and GOG for PC, the App Store for iOS devices, and Google Play for Android.
Enthusiasts of the game ‘RollerCoaster Tycoon Classic’ have long anticipated a version for Nintendo Switch, and we’re thrilled to make it available on this platform,” stated Ethan Stearns, vice president of games publishing at Atari in a press release. “Our collaborators at Graphite Lab did an outstanding job adapting the intricate keyboard controls of ‘RollerCoaster Tycoon Classic’ for controller use.
Stearns went on to say, “Bringing ‘RollerCoaster Tycoon Classic’ to the Nintendo Switch, given its large user base, offers a chance to reconnect with past players, provide our current players with another excellent gaming platform, and introduce the series to a new generation of gamers who will now encounter it on the Switch.
Here is an overview of the game, via Atari:
In a nutshell, RollerCoaster Tycoon Classic brings together top elements from both the initial games in the series – RollerCoaster Tycoon and its sequel RollerCoaster Tycoon 2. Since its debut in 1999, enthusiasts have been thrilled with the opportunity to design, construct roller coasters and attractions, shape their parks’ landscapes, and manage them all.
The launch of RollerCoaster Tycoon Classic on Switch marks the perfect ending to a bustling year for this popular franchise. In March 2024, Atari initiated a year-long tribute to honor the 25th anniversary of Chris Sawyer’s groundbreaking creation, RollerCoaster Tycoon. Since then, Atari has released various RollerCoaster Tycoon merchandise and collaborations, re-introduced RCT Classic on Android devices, expanded the mobile game RollerCoaster Tycoon Touch significantly, and acquired RollerCoaster Tycoon 3 from Frontier to bring a key title back into the franchise’s collection.
