As a long-time enthusiast who grew up with ROMhacking.net, I can’t help but feel a sense of nostalgia tinged with melancholy as I read about its impending closure. For nearly two decades, this platform has been an indispensable part of my gaming journey, providing countless hours of entertainment and camaraderie with fellow fans from all corners of the globe.
After about two decades, the well-known online destination for video game ROMs, fan translations, and bug fixes, ROMhacking.net, is closing down its primary services. Since its inception, ROMhacking.net has been one of the most extensive (and longest-standing) websites on the internet for preserving ROMs from Nintendo, PlayStation, Sega, Atari, Xbox, and other gaming platforms. However, it will still be around as a news outlet.
In a recent announcement on their website, the founder of ROMhacking.net, who goes by Nightcrawler, disclosed that the platform will be closing down immediately due to several reasons. Primarily, the site has surpassed its initial expectations and accomplished numerous goals since inception. Moreover, Nightcrawler stated that the internet’s growth over the years has reduced the necessity of ROMhacking.net as it once was. Lastly, they mentioned an attempt to pass the site on to another group, but personal boundaries were violated, leading to this decision to shut down operations.
“After approximately two decades of operation, I find myself at a point where it’s best to close down the site. The journey has been incredible – we accomplished nearly everything we initially aimed for and so much more. We were the first to unite hacking and translation communities, outliving and surpassing earlier ROM hacking sites. We transformed ROM hacking from a niche and scattered activity into a global and centralized one. We amassed the world’s largest community of ROM hackers. We made learning resources more accessible to a broader audience. We played a crucial role in legitimizing ROM hacking, moving it out of the shadows and into mainstream acceptance. We paved the way for future generations by simplifying the path forward. Undeniably, this site has left an indelible mark on ROM hacking, ensuring its legacy will live on.”
Initially, a small, obscure website transformed into a constantly expanding and globally recognized platform, which made maintaining sustainability quite difficult. The surge in activity led to round-the-clock usage, long queues, and an overflowing inbox. It’s a far cry from what the world looked like in 2005. As time passed, the necessity for this specific site decreased. Today, there are numerous alternatives available for online discussions, open source projects, and digital file storage on the internet.
Regarding the future of ROMhacking.net, Nightcrawler explains that they have transferred their vast collection of data to the Internet Archive for safekeeping. The site’s news articles and forum discussions will continue to be accessible. However, all related Discord servers and X channels associated with the website have been taken down. At this point, it’s unclear if ROMhacking.net will resurface in a different form down the line. For now, it appears that we are saying goodbye to a cherished gaming archive site.
