Romance Is Returning to Assassin's Creed With Shadows

As a longtime fan of the Assassin’s Creed series, I can’t help but feel elated at the news that romance options are making their return to the franchise with Assassin’s Creed Shadows. The absence of romantic relationships in the most recent game left me feeling a little hollow and disconnected from the experience. Don’t get me wrong, I still enjoyed playing Assassin’s Creed Mirage, but the lack of that deeper connection to characters was noticeable.

In an interview with YouTuber JorRaptor, the associate narrative developer of Assassin’s Creed Shadows, Brook Davies, revealed that the upcoming game in the series will include romance options for its two main characters, Naoe and Yasuke. This marks a return to romantic storylines in the franchise following their absence in Assassin’s Creed Mirage. During the interview, Davies shared some preliminary information about how these romance mechanics will be implemented in Assassin’s Creed Shadows.

In the interview, Davies shares his perspective: Shadows offers deeper character connections. Prepare to engage with intricate friendships and romantic ties for Naoe and Yasuke. It’s not just about dating; instead, we delve into meaningful and long-lasting relationships.

Although the relationships in the game are described as more profound, they don’t necessarily have to be solemn all the time. In an interview, Davies mentioned that Shadows will feature some lighter romances as well, suggesting brief encounters for players. According to Davies, players will build connections with certain characters and have the chance to explore these relationships further through quests and various storylines. This resembles the romantic options in Assassin’s Creed Odyssey, where Alexios or Kassandra could deepen their bond with Kyra over multiple quests and branching narratives.

In Shadows, outside of the romantic storyline, players may have the opportunity to explore side characters more thoroughly than in past Assassin’s Creed installments. This could provide a richer experience as players engage with NPCs in more significant ways, enhancing their understanding and connection to the game’s setting.

The new installation of Assassin’s Creed Shadows, scheduled for release on November 15th, is accessible on Xbox Series X|S and PlayStation 5 consoles, Ubisoft+ subscription service, Amazon Luna cloud gaming platform, iPad, Mac computers with Apple Silicon chips, and Windows PC through the Ubisoft Store and Epic Games Store. Pre-orders are currently open.
