Despite the gloomy outlook caused by Microsoft’s recent job cuts, project terminations, and studio closures, including Romero Games, it has been clarified that Romero Games itself is not closing. According to reports by VGC, Romero Games stated that though their next game’s funding was withdrawn and the project consequently cancelled, the studio continues to operate for the time being.
The studio has chosen to clarify some recent rumors about Romero Games’ current situation. It appears that some information spread was incorrect, and we believe it’s crucial to present the truth.
Unfortunately, the financial support for our project has been withdrawn, leading to the cancellation of our game. Since we’re bound by confidentiality agreements, we can’t reveal the identity of the publisher. This has forced us to reconsider and potentially make changes across all departments within our studio.
In a follow-up, Romero Games clarified that they are not shutting down and are making every effort to prevent such an outcome. They further stated that any speculation to the contrary is false. The team was even there on that day, discussing future plans.
Several publishers have reached out to us with offers to help complete our game, and we’re carefully considering these options at the moment. Thank you for your continued support; we’ll provide more information as soon as possible.
Romero Games recently announced that their current project, which had been progressing well, has been cancelled. This information was shared through a post on LinkedIn by co-founder Brenda Romero. The game’s cancellation came about when the publisher, who remains unnamed, made the decision to terminate the project.
Romero shared some tough news: “Last night, we found out that our game’s funding has been withdrawn by the publisher, along with several other unannounced projects from different studios. This decision was made at a high level within the company, beyond our reach or influence. We can only wish there had been something, anything, we could have done to change this outcome.
Our team’s efforts, performance, and project quality are not at all being questioned here. We have met every deadline without fail, consistently received commendations, and sailed through all internal reviews effortlessly. We stand tall with pride for the work we do and the talented individuals who make it possible. This is the best team I’ve ever worked with.
Given these circumstances, Romero shared that the studio and its management are taking every necessary step to minimize the impact of this project termination, aiming to prevent possible layoffs. Nevertheless, she also reached out to colleagues in the industry, urging them to stay alert for any potential openings where developers from Romero Games might find suitable employment.
The last major release by Romero Games was tactical strategy title Empire of Sin back in 2020.
