As I read through the heartfelt tributes pouring in for Shannen Doherty, I can’t help but be reminded of the profound impact that celebrities can have on our lives, even if we’ve never met them. Growing up, Shannen was a beacon of strength and resilience for me. Her character Brenda Walsh on Beverly Hills, 90210 was someone I looked up to and admired.
Rose McGowan is looking back at her complicated relationship with the late Shannen Doherty.
In the August 23rd episode of “Let’s Be Clear with Shannen Doherty,” the actress who replaced Shannen Doherty after her departure from “Charmed” and the death of her character Prue Halliwell, paid tribute to the late star, describing her as the most courageous individual she had ever known.
“McGowan expressed that if given a chance, he would’ve liked to meet Doherty earlier. He admitted he’s unsure how it could’ve happened, but he wishes our paths had crossed sooner.”
Doherty died in July at the age of 53 after a longtime battle with cancer.
In 1997, during the shooting of the thriller “Nowhere,” McGowan encountered the TV celebrity. However, once McGowan became a cast member on “Charmed” as Paige Matthews, she remarked that from that point forward, there was a significant media rivalry between us… I was simply informed that she had been let go, and no one discussed it further.
As a seasoned lifestyle guide, I’ve often found myself fielding queries from curious journalists about whether I, in my encounters with the captivating actress who starred in “Jawbreaker”, sensed any underlying feelings of animosity or envy between us.
As an ardent admirer, I steadfastly resisted the temptation to engage in a conflict, for they were attempting to lure me into a feud with her. But alas, neither of us was interested in such a confrontation; instead, we both gracefully avoided it.
As a devoted admirer, I myself had the privilege of accompanying McGowan, Doherty, and Holly Marie Combs at MegaCon Orlando in February. The moments we shared were truly precious, but the time spent with Doherty toward the end of her life was an exceptionally cherished gift. To have been able to spend the last year and half by her side was nothing short of remarkable.
Expressing admiration for Doherty’s creation of the podcast late in life to debunk misconceptions and share her personal story, McGowan stated, “It’s incredibly tough to break free from the prevailing narrative. I am immensely proud that she managed it. She accomplished this at the end and on her own terms.”
And in doing so, Doherty was able to help others, McGowan noted.
Concerning the acquaintance of Beverly Hills, 90210 star she had, McGowan commented, “The most common misunderstanding about her was that she was tough. However, this was true but not a reflection of her authentic self. I would say the same applies to me – we both have a penchant for laughter. Beneath our tough exterior, we are soft at heart.”

“So young, so sad” was written on Instagram by the Beverly Hills, 90210 alum and ex-SAG-AFTRA president, expressing his grief over Shannon’s passing. I believe Luke is waiting for her with open arms in a loving embrace up there.
The former actress-turned-therapist, who portrayed Cindy Walsh, the mother of Shannen and Jason Priestley’s twin characters Brenda and Brandon, expressed on Instagram that she was both stunned and deeply sorrowful upon hearing about her onscreen daughter’s passing.
She penned, “What an incredible path she traversed!” Unfortunately, her time was cut short. Regardless, she remained authentic throughout and presented a model of bravery and tenacity as she confronted her impending demise. Let us remember her with peace.

If anyone ever faced death bravely and said no thanks, it was you, dearest Shannen. My respect goes out to you, the courageous one. All my love forever.”
The actor, best known for his role as Leo Wyatt on Charmed, expressed on Instagram that you exhibited the essence of strength. You inspired me to be bold, live with intent, recognize my worth, and stand firm in my convictions.
“Forever loved!” he added. “Truly heartbroken.”
“I’m deeply saddened by Shannen Doherty’s passing, as I shared on my Instagram Stories on July 14th. When I was diagnosed with breast cancer, I recalled how bravely she allowed the world to follow her journey and reached out to her. We quickly became friends, a connection that often left me in awe because watching her on ‘Newsroom’ was such a significant part of my life when I was ten.”
She expressed that our connection grew from a mutual struggle and a common goal of assisting other women. Reflecting on the last message she sent me only a few months back, she inquired about my well-being and if there was anything she could do for me… as always, Shannen was extending her help, even though she was at the most critical phase of battling this dreadful illness.
Olivia concluded her statement with a heartfelt message to her late friend. “Cancer is really f–king scary and Shannen faced it with such dignity, strength and grace,” she expressed. “I’m sending all of my love to her mother who was her best friend, hero and champion every step of the way. Fly so high, my friend.”
In response to Shannen’s last Instagram post, the actress, fighting against multiple sclerosis, expressed her gratitude for your presence and added: “You’ve shown us the strength to persevere. A true warrior spirit.”
The actress commented on Shannen’s latest Instagram post saying, “I love you.” She expressed her feelings by adding, “Soar high, wonderful, compassionate soul. This is tough. Your warmth, bravery, and kindness will be deeply missed.”
